Within Internet explorer the document is not locked.

Thanks for the report! This might be related to issue 852204 , with discussion about how it applies to MS Office Online in issue 853021 , where site isolation might be causing unload handlers to not run, and hence to not clean up state correctly after closing the document. Can you please check two things:

1. Does setting chrome://flags/#site-isolation-trial-opt-out to "Opt out" fix your issue?

2. Can you try this in the current Chrome beta release (version 68.0.3440.33), and do you still see the issue there?

As per comment#1 adding Need-Feedback label.

@Reporter: Could you please check comment#1 and respond to it. You can download latest beta release from https://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel.

Thanks!

Update: Chrome 67.0.3396.99 is now available on the stable channel with the fix for issue 852204 . You can trigger an update manually by visiting chrome://chrome. Can you check to see if that resolves the issue?
