Using the back button to return to search results switches you to the Google app

Reported by mishasy...@gmail.com, Jun 20 2018

Issue description

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Perform a Google search (even in an incognito window!)
2. Click on a result website
3. Click the back button to return to the search results

What is the expected behavior?
Browser used to and should simply go back into tab history and land you back on the search results.

What went wrong?
Instead, the Google app launches and puts you in search results there. If you're not paying attention, the switch is pretty seamless. The problem is if you're in incognito mode in Chrome, you're in the clear in Google, and you can be committing private searches and browsing to your search history without realizing.

Did this work before? Yes

Chrome version: 63.0.3239.73 Channel: stable
OS Version: 9.3.5
Flash Version:

If you hold back and skip further than one back in history, even to another Google search result, Chrome behaves as expected. From there, you can click forward once to get to the desired search results without issue. The problem only triggers on a single step backwards into history.
