Cannot long-press on keys to enter accented characters in docs and slides

Project Member Reported by grt@chromium.org, Jun 11 2018

Issue description

Open up a doc or slides. Give focus to the doc. Hold down a key like 'e'. Expect that the OS-provided character picker appears. It doesn't. Hmm. But I see that the touchbar shows the accented chars. Okay, release the 'e' and tap one of the accented chars on the touchbar. Nothing happens. Huh.

Now, for point of comparison, go to some vanilla web page with a text entry field and do the same thing. Notice that the picker appears and works as expected.

My guess: docs and slides are doing some more sophisticated key event grabbing that somehow interferes with the OS-provided character picker. It's kinda frustrating for any mac user who needs to type accented chars (in other words, most of the non-US world).

Apologies if this is a dup. I couldn't find another issue for this. Thanks.

This sounds like it may be a bug on the Docs team rather than an issue in Chrome. Does it work in Safari?

Comment 3 by grt@chromium.org, Jun 21 2018

In Safari, the character picker also does not appear. However, the "keys" on the touchbar function properly. Seems like a Chrome bug.

Really, this is b/37956451

But what's the chrome version? (does your Chrome app menu have a white or grey background)

Routing to spqchan in case there's some way we can use the TouchBar to workaround the Kix bug.

(maybe that's already fixed by https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/1106599 ..)

I believe it was reported on Chrome 66.
