Expanding sidebar in the new Gmail UI is jank city

Project Member Reported by esprehn@chromium.org, Jun 8 2018

Issue description

Google Chrome	67.0.3396.62 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Revision	babbbb5b433370f9a7feeb9f98a57599ad1c4676-refs/branch-heads/3396@{#702}
OS	Mac OS X
JavaScript	V8 6.7.288.42

This is on my Trashcan Mac Pro.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Opt into new Gmail
(2) Click the hot dogs in the top left to make the side bar collapse
(3) Hover the side bar on and off to make it expand and collapse

What is the expected result?

Shouldn't spend so much time doing rendering pipeline stuff. Looks like only ~250 elements are effected?

What happens instead?

Super janky, each takes 50-100ms.

It does seem Firefox and Safari are both super janky too, both are spending a lot of time computing style and layout. Unfortunate that so much time in Chrome is spent inside UpdateLayerTree as well.

It seems likely that this is the same "over-hidden makes layer updates expensive" problem that has just been fixed. Over to chrishtr@ to see if there's any before/after improvement.

I just tried on M68 and it looks a lot better - much less than 16ms per frame.
I think gmail changed its code.

Don't think there is something actionable at this point.
