Activity monitor shows Google Chrome Helper at 100% CPU when Task Manager shows no tabs at 100% CPU

Project Member Reported by rdsmith@chromium.org, Jun 8 2018

Issue description

Chrome Version: 67.0.3396.62 (Official Build) (64-bit)
OS: Mac OS X 10.13.4 (17E202)

A couple of times recently I've had instances where Mac OS X Activity monitor shows that a Google Chrome Helper process is consuming 100% of the CPU, but that's not visible in the Task Manager. (See the attached screenshot.)

I suspect the cause of the 100% cpu is issue 848210 , but this bug is about the Activity Monitor/Task Manager mismatch.

Thanks for the report. This is because the Chrome task manager only shows things it knows how to track. There's a bug on file for showing everything: issue 739782. (For example, if this case was a ServiceWorker process like issue 810633, then fixing issue 716609 would solve it.)

For now, you can run Chrome with --task-manager-show-extra-renderers to show a "Renderer:" line for unknown processes like this.
