YouTube video stutters occasionally

Reported by simeonve...@gmail.com, Jun 7 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/67.0.3396.79 Safari/537.36

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open up any YouTube video
2. Preferably a 60fps one
3. Preferably on a 120Hz+ monitor

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
YouTube videos stutter occasionally on Ubuntu 18.04 and Chrome 67. The stutter is completely random, from rare to very often. I think the stutter is most common on 60fps videos with 120Hz+ refresh rate of my monitor. I've never experienced such lag before on the same configuration - i3-6100U with IntelĀ® HD Graphics 520 and a 120Hz+ monitor on Ubuntu 16.10 Chrome 65. The sound of the video is playing while the video hangs for 1-3 second up to a 9-10 seconds! The only thing running on the system is that video. When I switch to 60Hz the stutter is very rare though it happens from time to time for about 1-3 seconds.

Did this work before? N/A

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

I forgot to mention that the same configuration (Ubuntu 18.04, i3-6100U with IntelĀ® HD Graphics 520, 120Hz monitor) works without problems for YouTube videos on Firefox 60 and Firefox 62 Nightly.

Thanks for the report. Adding video render folks.

> The only thing running on the system is that video.

Can you repeat this test on the 120 hz display and open a second tab to chrome://media-internals. Once you observe a fair bit of stutter, select the "player" in the internals page and copy the output to this bug.
I've attached the media-internals dump. It's a 1080p 60fps boxing video (on 120Hz). The first big stutter was around 2:40m of the video for about 8 seconds, then a couple of seconds later again a big stutter. Then a third one a few minutes later, also one prior taking the dump. In all instances the audio is playing, only the video hangs. Hope that helps.

It turns out that the problem is with Chrome in combination with Gnome Shell: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029485/youtube-micro-stutter-after-18-04

I watched the exact same video in Chrome from start to finish without a single stutter in alternative desktop environment (namely i3). Then logged back in with Gnome and the stutter was present on the exact same video. Switching back and forth between x.org and wayland does not make any difference either.

Gnome is a bit demanding on system resources, but at the same time Firefox plays videos just fine in it. So I'm not sure if something should be tweaked in Chrome or in Gnome Shell. Note that Gnome Shell is now the default desktop environment in every major linux distribution.

Up until one week ago I was using Ubuntu 16.10 so it definitely was with an older version of Gnome (can't tell exactly which version). Currently Ubuntu 18.04 ships with Gnome Shell 3.28.1

Your log shows the video renderer's buffer of decoded frames is frequently running empty and then quickly ramps back up to having available frames.

        "key": "video_buffering_state",

      },

We try to anticipate the vsync interval and cap the queue to only a few frames for the next few vsyncs to avoid taking up lots of memory. My guess is the vsync often arrives much later than we expected and the ready frames we're holding are now too old (wrt to audio) and we freeze while we try scramble to get the new frames ready.

I'm assigning this to Dale. He's most familiar with the video renderer and I think he also has a 120hz display. He's traveling atm - will be a week before he sees the bug - but he's our best hope ;).

#0: Do you notice a difference when Wayland is enabled/disabled?
Sorry, no ideas offhand.
@chcunningham no, switching between x.org and wayland using Gnome does not make any difference. Stuttering happens on 60Hz as well.

Hmm, plus a couple compositing folks given you say this is specific to gnome.
Re: c#13, there are unfortunately an innumerable number of reasons for stuttering which range from bugs in chrome, bugs in os, bugs in drivers all the way to simply insufficient hardware.

At least in simeonvelichkov@'s case this seems to be related to Gnome shell (by virtue of his a/b test). @sunnyps, thomasanderson@ are you aware of any issues with linux compositing right now and gnome that might cause this?
@simeonvelichkov are you still having this issue?
On Chrome 68.0.3440.75 + latest updates for my OS - yes.

I've noticed that if I move my mouse I can brake the stutter, works almost every time.

=>sandersd@ who has been able to reproduce this on his home system. Seems we may not be getting the vsync interval right. @sunnyps any thoughts?
In the absence of GLX_OML_sync_control (I thought all mesa drivers had this but apparently not), we assume a frame rate of 60Hz no matter what the display says. We really should use xrandr information for this, but we haven't invested the time for implementing that.

However, the OS compositor should be able to handle an app that submits at less than refresh rate. Firefox probably has no issues because they probably use Xv or just plain pixmaps to put video on display instead of using GLX like Chrome.
I am indeed able to reproduce on Ubuntu 18.04, Intel UHD Graphics 630, mutter 3.28.2, kernel 4.15.0. The attached display is running at 100Hz over DisplayPort.

I built Chromium HEAD in release mode with dcheck_always_on so that I could enable video_renderer_algorithm logging. I don't see anything helpful in the logs, but I'm attaching them in case dalecurtis@ can see something I've missed.

The logs do show a drop at or slighty before the stall. The logs use different timebases so it's hard to be very sure.

One note on the logs, the BUFFERING_HAVE_NOTHING state is shown to have lasted for less than 10ms, but the playback stall was many seconds long.
Looks like you're at least getting a 10ms interval:

[1:18:0724/194421.863469:VERBOSE2:video_renderer_algorithm.cc(210)] Deadline: [1915363900, 1915373901], Interval: 10001, Duration: 33318

There are quite a few instances of missing intervals:
1:18:0724/194451.769162:VERBOSE2:video_renderer_algorithm.cc(450)] Missed 4 Render() intervals.

Did audio play during the stall? The missed intervals would correspond to frozen frames.
Yes, audio continues to play. It seems that we're just not rendering new frames. Mouse movement is a trigger for recovering, which may be related to YouTube showing controls on mouse movement.

I plan to attempt to reproduce with something other than YouTube, but at ~7min per repro it's a slow process. I'm hoping that I can increase the reproduction frequency by tuning the complexity of the content.
I think videos like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVvEISFw9w0 are as demanding as it can get. It stalls for me on 1080p60 / 120Hz in under a minute almost always. At least it's a chill-out one.
From the algorithm's perspective it seems like we're just not getting begin frame calls regularly then. As for why that's happening I can't tell from that log. @sandersd: Can you capture a trace while playing? You'll want the gpu+media+cc categories enabled. @sunnyps: any other useful ones to enable?
viz category too (it's included in "Rendering" section)
I've been doing exactly that. I got lucky with one and had a stall immediately after starting playback, which is important because the buffer fills quickly with all the rendering stuff turned on. I did the rendering preset, minus blink, plus media.

This trace shows the sequence:
  - Start tracing
  - Switch tabs to YouTube
  - Fullscreen
  - Play (at 3.3s)
  - Stall (region around 7s)
  - Exit and stop tracing

It looks like media:: is continuing to decode and upload frames to the GPU the whole time, but the compositor just stops doing work.

So this is using the video surfaces path? The VideoResourceUpdater::CreateForHardwarePlanes trace event is on the media thread instead of compositor thread. It looks like video updates stop when the renderer compositor is not submitting frames.

Trace with video surfaces disabled. I also added blink, and correctly enabled media this time. The stall is ~10s long and therefore takes up most of the trace.

Video/audio look fine in that trace, we're getting begin frames and vending valid video frames back. Swap buffers seems to be happening on the GPU thread too, so not sure what's wrong.
Render thread activity dies to nothing, not sure what that's about.
Before render thread goes idle, I see "TileManager::AssignGpuMemory tile
violates memory policy" traces which usually indicate hitting our hard
memory limit. We're using GMBs and issuing CopyRowsToNV12Buffer tasks every
frame. Those tasks copy 2560x204 pixels at one time, and there seem to be 8
of these per frame which probably corresponds to 2560x1600 display. I'm not
sure how the synchronization between the copy and use of the GMB in the GPU
process works.
Those events seem to be extremely frequent outside of the stall; there are 343 of them total.
Note: our hard memory limit is a self imposed limit of 512MB for tile memory
if I recall correctly.
As mentioned in person, I'd recommend just upping the hard coded limit in a test build to see if things change.
Trace with limits raised to 4GiB. "TileManager::AssignGpuMemory tile
violates memory policy" messages continue to be frequent. No notable change in stall behavior.

I also created traces with memory-infra and viz overlay debug. Memory use did not seem to be increasing and the overlays appear to scheduled throughout stalls. (Not attached due to low quality of these traces; the buffer fills up fast with memory-infra enabled.)

Slightly different methodology this time; this time I paused the video ~immediately after the stall, which makes it easy to locate the stall in the trace. The stall was a few seconds in this case.

I honestly can't eyeball an obvious place in the trace that would indicate the stall started. As far as I can tell, everything is running fine the entire time. (Which supports the compositor bug theory, but doesn't really point to a next step.)

That trace uses the video surfaces code path AFAICT. Renderer compositor and main threads seem to go idle where the stall happens.

Interesting observation: the media thread only issues command buffer OrderingBarrier and not Flush. In the absence of an explicit Flush commands will be queued up but never be sent to the GPU process. I suspect when the compositor is idle it issues explicit Flush once per frame which also flushes the ordering barriers of video (ordering barrier list is global per process in GpuChannelHost).

Can you try changing the GenUnverifiedSyncTokenCHROMIUM() call to GenSyncTokenCHROMIUM() here: https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/media/renderers/video_resource_updater.cc?rcl=8927190d6343b3e607ca1c267866305038773e5a&l=154

(creating a verified sync token has the side-effect of flushing)

* I meant to say when compositor is *not* idle it issues explicit flushes once per frame.
My above comment might be a red herring. VideoFrameSubmitter calls ClientResourceProvider::PrepareSendToParent() before submitting frame to viz. PrepareSendToParent causes an implicit flush by verifying unverified sync tokens if delegated_sync_points_required is true (which it is).

I also noticed issue 855868 which is also looks like a synchronization issue except that we're displaying garbage there instead of stalling.

IIUC the video surface stuff is supposed to work with the new mojo VDA only, right? And the mojo VDA returns empty sync tokens to the renderer because we assume that the work of allocating and decoding is done in the GPU process when we return the mailbox and sync token, correct? I'd like to double check the assumptions there.
No VDA is used on Linux; this is VpxVideoDecoder.

GenSyncTokenCHROMIUM() did not make a difference.
