error trying to fix Files.app integration with Crostini

Project Member Reported by aleax@google.com, Jun 1 2018

Issue description

Chrome version: (copy from chrome://version) 68.0.3440.4 (Official Build) dev (64-bit)
OS: Chrome

Repro steps:
1. on a pixelbook, open crosh via control-alt-T
2. vmc start termina
3. lxc config device remove penguin ssh_authorized_keys

Expected: no output, Files.app fixed
Actual: error: The device doesn't exist (Files.app problem persists)

Following instructions from Crostini release notes, https://docs.google.com/document/d/11MXnz_Lpitme9gy3Be3epXMpQ4fnzEsfwLLKcqWo13M/edit -- Files.app sidebar does show a "Linux files" entry, but clicking it just shows the "working..." animation forever; so, tried above instructions as given in the release notes for "If you encounter an error with Files.app integration".

Labels: Needs-Feedback
@aleax some more info would be useful:
1. What error message are you getting in Files.app?
2. What version of cros-termina do you have (please check chrome://components)?
3. Have you run "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and restarted your device?

Comment 2 by aleax@google.com, Jun 4 2018

None: Files.app just "hangs" when I click the Linux Files entry on the left
navbar, with a green highlight strip repeatedly moving from left to right
on the top of the Files.app window (just below the Name / Size / Type /
Date Modified headers; the rest of the window pane right of the left navbar
is empty.

cros-termina - Version: 10739.0.0
Status - New

Yes. It made no difference. Copy & paste as I rerun both commands:

aleax@penguin:~$ sudo apt-get update

@aleax thank you! Can you confirm you restarted your device after running those commands?

@joelhockey any idea what could cause this hang?

Comment 4 by aleax@google.com, Jun 13 2018

Hi all,

Yes, I can confirm I restarted the pixelbook after running these commands.

aleax@, are you able to open the Terminal app?

nverne@, if FilesApp is not showing any error, I expect that the CrostiniManager restart call is not returning.

The best fix that I can suggest is to destroy the termina VM and start again. This will delete anything you have on your Linux VM.

 vmc destroy termina

Hi all,

Yes.

Done. Now what? the instructions e.g at
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1L_lvf_9gHcDXnAJPg-BUDeQf9CbwTM56sWvYAkdmO_s/edit#heading=h.5694kkwqjss7
only explain how to set up crostini the first time, and link within the
same doc to instructions marked `DEPRECATED` which assume there is a "turn
on " button under "Linux apps" in *chrome://settings -- there isn't: the
only option there would be to "Remove Linux apps from Chromebook". Is that
part of what I'm supposed to do? Followed by the "Enable Crostini UI for
the First Time" steps? (BTW, it would be great to have complete
instructions, not deprecated, for such tasks as restarting the Linux VM
after a chromebook reboot, etc etc).*

*Thanks,*

*Alex*

Hi all,

spent substantial time on Hangout with Joel Hockey (thanks Joel!) trying to
pin down the problem but no luck; Joel recommended I keep trying
periodically to remove and reinstall update versions and trust the problem
would be fixed. I followed the advice and, yay!, just now it finally DID
work -- the Files app now works correctly on the Linux Files and a copy and
paste allowed me to copy a small file to my Linux home directory. No idea
what exactly was wrong or how it got fixed, but, hey, all's well that ends
well!

SO I guess this bug can just be marked as fixed (but not sure how to do it
on the Chromium issue tracker).

Thanks,

Alex
