chrome.storage.local & sync can not be viewed in Dev tools like you can with ex localStorage

Reported by labobol...@gmail.com, Jun 1 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/66.0.3359.181 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Dev tools -> Application tab -> in list in Storage group

What is the expected behavior?
chrome.storage.local / sync should be viewable just like localStorage / sessionStorage / etc...

What went wrong?
Entries for chrome.storage.local / sync do not exist, in Storage group in list in Application tab in dev tools.

WebStore page:

Did this work before? No

Chrome version: 66.0.3359.181 Channel: n/a
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
Flash Version:

Is this an oversight or on purpose?

TE@, this is a feature request for devtools.

It'd be great, indeed. Currently the only solution is provided by an extension:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/storage-area-explorer/ocfjjjjhkpapocigimmppepjgfdecjkb
Unfortunately, it's rather slow when the storage contains lots of data.

Thanks for filing the issue!

As per comment#0 (...and clarification in C#1) it is understood that the issue seems to be a feature request rather than a bug. Hence marking it as Untriaged and requesting someone from Dev team to have a look into this issue.
Tentatively adding component "Platform>DevTools" please change if this isn't apt.

This would certainly be nifty, though isn't something the extensions team is likely to get to in the immediate future.

pwnall@, do you have an impression of how difficult this might be?

Marking as available for now, in case anyone wants to jump on this.
