Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/66.0.3359.181 Safari/537.36 Example URL: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/r Steps to reproduce the problem: Within the last month something appears to have changed within our environment where Calendar event desktop notifications do not provide sound. They do pop up but their is no sound. We have checked all Sound settings in Google Calendar settings, Chrome and Windows 10. Although it may not be related, I thought I should mention that the same behavior is occurring with Google Hangouts where these is no sound on new notifications. Sound on Google Calendar events in Internet Explorer works What is the expected behavior? Calendar notifications should pop up a reminder box and play a sound. Right now they are silent. What went wrong? All notifications for Google calendar are silent Did this work before? N/A Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A Does this work in other browsers? Yes, that could be autoplay related if the user never interacted with the calendar application or hangout after opening them.

Unable to reproduce the issue reported chrome version on 66.0.3359.181 and latest stable 67.0.3396.62 using Windows 10. Attaching Screencast for reference. Steps -------- 1. Lauched Chrome. 2. Navigated to given URL "https://calendar.google.com/calendar/r" 3. Enabled desktop notifications. We are able to hear the notification sounds. @Reporter: As we are unable to reproduce the issue from our end. Could you please update the thread as per C#2 Thanks!

Hello..In reference to C#2 (Yes, that could be autoplay related if the user never interacted with the calendar application or hangout after opening them) I am not sure how much more I could "interact" with Google Calendar. In my testing a few minutes ago I created a test meeting for 4:40PM EST with a notification set for 5,7 and 9 minutes before the meeting. I then proceeded to leave calendar.google.com Chrome tab open while I was awaiting the notifications. All 3 notifications popped up but were silent.

Able to reproduce the issue on reported chrome version 66.0.3359.181 & latest stable 67.0.3396.62 and on latest chrome 69.0.3445.2 using ubuntu 14.04,Windows 10 and Mac 10.13.1. Same behavior is seen on M60(60.0.3112.113) hence considering it as non-regression and marking it as Untriaged. Note: calendar popup make sounds some times and not able to hear sound some times. Thanks!

The challenge here is that we can't disambiguate between the site playing a sound that goes with a notification, and other forms of autoplay. One possibility would be for Chrome to play a sound when notifications are shown (so the site doesn't have to), similar to mobile, but this could result in a double-sound as sites adjust. Alternatively Notifications could be updated to include a media source that is requested to play. +jakearchibald +annevankesteren WDYT?

If I recall correctly, Calendar used to play a silent sound file on page load, so that it would continue to be allowed to play sounds for the rest of the tab's lifetime. We decided against supporting sounds as part of a notification due to both architectural difficulties (shown notification are usually not associated with a document) and interoperability concerns (expected behaviour definitely differs between platforms). Specific to macOS, Apple announced at WWDC last week that their notification model is going to change significantly, so at the very least we'd have to understand that first. (WWDC Session 710.)

Peter that answer makes sense from a standards perspective. But from a Chrome perspective, don't we already play sounds on Android when there is a notification?

#c12 - we use the notification center's default behaviour, which makes a sound on Android. There's no special logic to support that.

Hi Team....I am the person who opened this case. Sorry but I am just returning from being out since 6/11. In reading the notes I am not clear on where this case stands? Is this an acknowledged issue? Is is expected behaviour? Is any addtional info needed from me to help troubleshoot? Thanks

I am still having the problem as well. We are on Version 67.0.3396.99 (Official Build) (64-bit) as well. The problem started around 4/7/18 when 66.0.3359 was released.

@sshank in the short term, organizations can use their enterprise policy and add Calendar to their whitelist of sites where autoplay is allowed. Longer-term, the autoplay policy means that sites cannot be guaranteed audio playback before a user gesture, and it seems like the best solution for this request is an integration with native OS notifications on desktop (where the user may allow sound like other notifications through global settings). peter@ can you keep this bug informed on progress with those discussions?
