OS: (e.g. Win10, MacOS 10.12, etc...)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Long press on Gmail shelf icon to open context menu
(2) Click on the arrow on "New tab" item to open a submenu
(3) Click on "New window item"

What is the expected result?
the submenu stays open with the updated selection
or
the submenu closes, but the parent menu stays open

What happens instead?
the entire menu closes. this is confusing and unexpected
