Extreme negative text-indent values clip container

Reported by j.bruno....@gmail.com, May 10 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_13_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/67.0.3396.40 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Visit http://czycha.com/text-indent-bug/
2. Scroll down the page

What is the expected behavior?
Should have a dark bar fixed to the top of the screen with no text visible.

What went wrong?
The massively negative text-indent on the .text-indent element has rendered the container entirely invisible.

Did this work before? Yes

Chrome version: 67.0.3396.40 Channel: beta
OS Version: OS X 10.13.4
Flash Version:

This usually happens on repaint (here, triggered by adding a fixed position to the container on scroll).

It will only partially obscure at some lower numbers. For example, -3945px is when this starts for me on my 1280px wide screen. Try messing around with the text-indent number. Before a certain point (-3945px in my case), it will render OK.

Unable to reproduce on latest Firefox or on Chrome 66.0.3359.139 (latest non-beta release).

To see a live production version of this bug, check out the menus on http://www.nba.com/timberwolves/ or http://www.nba.com/hawks/. They were working a couple weeks ago.

As per comment #0 tested this issue, as we are unable to reproduce on reported chrome version: 67.0.3396.40 and 66.0.3359.139 also verified on firefox observed same behavior using Mac 10.12.6.Attaching screencast for reference.

@Reporter: As we are unable to reproduce the issue from our end. Can you please let us know if we miss anything and could you please provide any test file/Screencast for better triaging this issue.

Thanks!

Phanindra,

I think the difference between us is that I'm on the Beta version of Chrome. Attached is a video of what I'm seeing. In the video I show that the bar is completely gone when the text-indent on the contained element is -9999px, that it can be slightly obscured at some numbers closer to zero, and eventually it'll work as expected as you get closer to zero. I tried to mirror what you did since this is my first time reporting a Chromium issue, but let me know if you need to see anything else.

Thanks,
James

Issue is reproducible on reproted beta version #67.0.3396.40 on Mac 10.13.1,Windows 10, linux 14.04. But issue is not reproducible on equivalent dev build(i,e; 67.0.3396.40 dev). Issue is also not seen in latest dev 68.0.3423.2 and latest canary 68.0.3430.0 builds. Hence marking this issue as Untriaged for further inputs from dev team.

Thanks!

One assumes this is due to some experiment given the behavior changes dev/beta.

Could you please provide the text from "chrome://version" for a working and non-working version?
I don't have the dev build but, if that's relevant, you can see some of that info in the video posted by phanindra.mandapaka@chromium.org. Here is my beta (not-working.txt) and prod (working.txt).

I can't reproduce on Mac or Linux with either the reduced test case or the NBA sites, in current M-67 Beta nor M-68 Canary.

Is this still happening for any of the reporters?
Also not seeing it on the test site at current M67 beta. This bug must have been fixed, perhaps incidentally, recently.
