Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 10643.0.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/68.0.3417.0 Safari/537.36 Platform: 10643.0.0 (Official Build) dev-channel sentry Steps to reproduce the problem: There are times when a Chrome OS device is out of date and needs to be updated to function properly, but the only way to manually check for and install updates is to login as an approved user. This is cumbersome with a large fleet of Chromebooks. What is the expected behavior? Checking for and installing updates should be possible without logging into a device. Guest mode shouldn't be required. What went wrong? Examples of when this is needed: - Running on a dev/canary channel and the current version prevents login - When using a SAML SSO like Duo which prevents login from out of date devices on a stable channel, there's no way to login - When using Chromebooks as loaner devices which come in an out frequently, requiring a technician to login each time a device is checked in our out to check if there are pending updates and running them. Did this work before? No Chrome version: 68.0.3417.0 Channel: dev OS Version: 10643.0.0 Flash Version: It would also be great to be able to enable display of version on the login window for devices on the stable channel.

We have automatic updates configured, and do not scatter them in any way. The issue is that Chrome OS doesn't check for updates often enough, and there is no mechanism to make it check for updates from the login window. The ask is for a mechanism to kick off a manual check without needing to login.

I also want to note that the suggested workaround by support is to enable guest mode, which we do not want to do.

Assign this to John who may know about Chrome OS updates. John, feel free to reassign this FR to more appropriate person. CC David in case enterprise components are needed for this FR.

This would be a great feature to have for education. Auto-Updates don't always work, and students tend to not log out of their devices. This would be extremely beneficial for techs. Especially during the summertime, when these devices still idle for several months, and need to be updated for fall. Techs could turn them on and just click the update button on the login screen and update 100s of Chromebooks very quickly.

I forgot to mention that this would also be a benefit, during device enrollment, as not every device gets fully updated during the enrollment process.

I agree this would be a beneficial thing for schools and larger deployments.

Or, in Admin Console, these devices are online and out of date, would you like to push an update? *** downloads updates for those devises and pushes them out, deletes update. |
