The base::ProcessMetrics implementation on Linux walks 
/proc/<pid>/task/<tid>/stat 
and adds them up to get cumulative CPU time. When threads die, their cumulatives vanish from this tally, whereas
/proc/<pid>/stat
should presumably preserve same.
