Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/66.0.3359.139 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. A reduced test case can be found here: https://codepen.io/bendenfield/pen/WJddvV What is the expected behavior? The browser should show a smooth animation when scaling down the image, like it is done on lower zoom levels. What went wrong? The issue occurs for me down until a zoom level of about 28, in that it just not shows an animation for scaling the image, but instead hides the image and shows it again, after the css-animation has completed. (I don't mean the blurriness of the image during animation.) Did this work before? No Does this work in other browsers? Yes Chrome version: 66.0.3359.139 Channel: stable OS Version: 10.0 Flash Version: The performance tab in DevTools doesn't show a significant leak. During the animation a few style calculations appear which only take up a few microseconds, but I honestly don't think that they do anything.

Able to reproduce this issue on reported version 66.0.3359.139 and on latest canary 68.0.3425.0 using Windows 10, Ubuntu 14.04 and Mac 10.13.3. But issue is not seen on M60. Hence marking this as Untriaged. Will provide bisect info soon. Thanks!

Able to reproduce this issue from M60. But different behavior is seen in different builds. Below are the observations. 1. From M60 - M61 : No grey background is seen while zoom level decreases but image hides and comes back when animation is seen 2. From M62 - M68 : Grey background is seen for decrease in zoom level. 3. In Firefox smooth transition is seen. Attaching screencast of all behaviors. As this issue is seen from M-60 considering this issue as Non-Regression and marking this as Untriaged. Thanks!

chrishtr@, could you take a quick look at this and give an opinion on what is happening? At the smaller scales factors it seems like we are hitting some threshold for re-raster, and that makes sense to me. But I have no idea why we are going grey at high scale factors.

Not sure what's causing the grey flash either. I'll repro locally to debug. |
