Inbox chat rendering problem

Project Member Reported by siggi@chromium.org, May 3 2018

Issue description

Chrome Version: Version 68.0.3418.1 (Official Build) canary-dcheck (32-bit)
OS: Win10

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Navigate to inbox.google.com.
(2) Open a chat popup.
(3) Scroll the message list.

What is the expected result?
The chat popup should not go transparent.

What happens instead?
The chat popup goes transparent. Sometimes while scrolling down the page this happens, sometimes there's a delay, it's pretty inconsistent.
Mousing over the chat contact strip will then render that transparent (or invisible) too..

I've been seeing this on and off for a couple of days now. First reproed reliably on 3416, and Pat (CCd) repros the same on the 3417 build. Chris also repros.

Inbox works just fine on my stable build.

This repros under --disable-gpu, so I'm betting on a Blink problem.

Could you do a bisect for us to try to isolate the problem? It seems that Inbox content is needed that we do not have on the paint team.

I can reproduce on 68.0.3418.2 / Linux. Will bisect.
Also broken in 67.0.3396.30 / Linux.
Works fine in 66.0.3359.139 / Linux.
It's specific to RLS I think. I suspect it's a duplicate of 838111.

siggi@chromium.org, this should be fixed and I verified I can no longer reproduce this on inbox.google.com. Could you please double-check in Chrome Canary and make sure this was fixed?

Comment 10 by pdr@chromium.org, May 9 2018

Wait, I am still able to reproduce this bug. Maybe the fix will not be in canary until tomorrow.
I can still repro. Looks like the patch didn't make today's canary.
I just confirmed that cfebac612b10fdf961dca9df2bb28581577a612a is not yet in
any Canary.
I verified that the bug is fixed in Chrome Canary / OSX / 68.0.3423.2.

The bug reproduces on a Retina Mac when Chrome is started with
--disable-prefer-compositing-to-lcd-text

I can still repro on Windows, on Version 68.0.3427.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit).
