CVox swipe navigation does not work in portrait + tablet mode

Project Member Reported by leberly@chromium.org, May 3 2018

Issue description

This came in from an internal user and needs to be verified. Assigning to myself to verify.

"Looks like swipe navigation, regardless of touch or stylus, stops working everywhere in Chrome so long we are in portrait mode."

1.ENVIRONMENT:
Device:Google Pixelbook with Stylus
OS:Chrome
Browser Versions:
Chrome - 63
Language: English
Prerequisite:Enable screen reader

STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE BUG:
a.Create a new Docs document
b.Open any menu item using stylus

ACTUAL RESULT:
Focus is not seen on menu items

EXPECTED RESULT:
Focus should be seen

"Yes, with CVox enabled, both swipe navigation and touch exploration with the stylus on the menus is correctly working and even the verbalization is proper. This is working fine only when we keep the Pixel book in laptop mode. However, if we flip the device to tablet mode, then both swipe navigation and touch exploration with the stylus are not working if Accessibility is ON."

Update from user:

Reproduced in M67
Turn CVox on
2. Flip into tablet mode
3. Flip into portrait mode
4. Try to swipe navigate.

Just to clarify, ChromeVox does not support the stylus for either flick navigation or touch exploration.

@Laura, Is this with finger touch flick or stylus? Also, to make sure we're in sync for terms:
tablet mode: Pixelbook screen folded on top of keyboard
laptop mode: not in tablet mode

Not sure what portrait refers to. Portrait vs landscape is usually used when orienting the screen in tablet mode.

I can reproduce this and it appears to be working as intended. dtseng, what do you think?

Portrait means the convertible Chromebook is put into tablet mode by folding the screen over the keyboard and then it is turned such that the shorter edges of the screen are on the top and bottom and the longer edges are left and right.

Chrome 65.0.3325.167 beta channel
Google_Eve.9584.107.0

Steps:
# In tablet mode, turn on ChromeVox using ctrl + alt + z
# Put Chromebook into portrait orientation as defined above
# Use your finger to tap anywhere on the screen
Expected: either focus moves to touch point or nothing happens if portrait mode is not supported
Actual: earcon plays a sound indicating that something is wrong, focus is not under finger at all. This happens regardless of Docs being on the screen or any other part of the UI.

I verified that I can access the menus in Docs when the Chromebook is in tablet mode, landscape orientation.

I don't have an Eve running dev or canary channel right now hence the older OS version in this bug.

I am a little confused by what you mean by working as intended, do we not have any plans to support Chromevox with touch in potrait orientation, and stylus in both orientations?

I feel these are more like bugs which should be fixed. OOC, why do we not want to support it?

Update: this is not working as intended and we do plan to support linear navigation on Chromebook tablet mode/portrait orientation. David T clarified that the earcon I heard indicates that you are trying to reach something offscreen - a bug in how the screen is calculated.

I have filed a second bug for that and will close this bug as a duplicate of that one: 847677

I have updated this internally as well. See b/73281626 for more details.
