Corrupted OS

Reported by donal...@gmail.com, Apr 29 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 10323.67.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.209 Safari/537.36
Platform: Asus Chromebox

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Cannot reproduce.. complete reset fixed it
2.
3.

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
My Chromebox would not work this morning. Had to do a full reset and return Chromebox to original factory state. Message said Chrome OS was corrupted.

Now my Chrome About Version says "Nearly up to date. You have to restart your device" I am afraid to...

Did this work before? Yes

Chrome version: 65.0.3325.209 Channel: n/a
OS Version: 10323.67.0
Flash Version: 29.0.0.113

I thought I was getting away from being a system administrator. That is why I left Windows.

Any luck with your device? Did you get this resolved?

Comment 4 by donal...@gmail.com, May 11 2018

I have not had any more issues. Help About says:

Nearly up to date! Restart your device to finish updating.
Version 65.0.3325.209 (Official Build) (64-bit)

I have not restarted. Any advice?

I'd recommend restarting your device. If it does fail you can always recover the device using: https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1080595?hl=en

Thanks for the advice. What happened to no admin duties?

Comment 8 by donal...@gmail.com, May 15 2018

I did the update. It seemed fine. But after a few hours it now says this:

Nearly up to date! Restart your device to finish updating.
Version 66.0.3359.137 (Official Build) (64-bit)

What is this constant demand for restarting? Feels like I am back in the
world of Windows. Sucks.

Did you restart again. Sounds like you were a few releases behind and the update just needed to be restarted.

We release software every 6 weeks so at minimal you will have to restart every 6 weeks. Sometimes we try to minimize it there are a few updates to the stable channel itself that you might need to reboot in that window.

Sounds like you are past the corrupted OS though right?

Who knows where I am... It still insists I need to update. It started
saying that RIGHT AFTER an update. I no longer trust Chrome. Google has
disappointed me royally.

Nearly up to date! Restart your device to finish updating.

Is this Google's way of saying they are no longer updating my device?
Harder to decipher what is happening than even Windows and that is a low
bar.

Is the version changing after each update. You can see the active releases here:

Two more restarts and it says

Your Chromebox is up to date
Version 66.0.3359.181 (Official Build) (64-bit)

I wonder how long that will last?

Chrome 67 is shipping on desktop currently.

So expect that Chrome 67 rolls out to Chrome OS next week.

See https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2018/05/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_58.html and https://www.chromium.org/developers/calendar for more details on dates if this affects your deployment.

Enterprise managed devices can be locked to a release so you can choose when to update devices.

Comment 18 by donal...@gmail.com, May 30 2018

Well, I have restarted this Chromebox for updates at least 6 times in the
last month. Seems excessive to me. Hardly one release every six weeks.
Hardly automatic.

I guess I am just an old grumpy software person. Out of date and wanting
it easy.
