Issue description
Chrome Version : 66.0.3359.117
OS Version: 10.0
URLs (if applicable) :
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
Safari:
Firefox:
IE/Edge: OK
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Visit a site that has a lot of scroll. One example that works reliably for me is Amazon like the link below
https://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=sr_nr_n_1?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A6742111011%2Ck%3Aboard+games&keywords=board+games&ie=UTF8&qid=1524494392&rnid=5264023011
2. Start to scroll down the screen with the mouse wheel
3.
What is the expected result?
That I can continue to scroll
What happens instead of that?
The scrolling stops and won't work until I reload the page.
Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.
UserAgentString: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/66.0.3359.117 Safari/537.36
I was having this problem in Chrome 65 as well but it was pretty rare and if I reloaded the page it would usually work fine. Since switching to Chrome 66 I'm seeing it a lot more and more often then not the problem will happen again after a reload.
I disabled Smooth scrolling via chrome://flags/#smooth-scrolling and the problem has gone away.

Unable to reproduce this issue on reported version 66.0.3359.117 using Windows 10 with steps mentioned in comment#0. Checked the issue by altering chrome://flags/#smooth-scrolling (enabling/disabling and when in default as well). Attaching screencast for reference. @Reporter: Could you please check the the video and let us know if we miss anything. Also please check issue on fresh profile which do not have any apps/extensions. Does this happen in Incognito mode as well? Any further info on reproducing the issue would help in further triaging. Thanks!

I'm facing a similar issue. Sometime mouse wheel scroll stop responding on a specific tab. The mouse wheel is functional elsewhere.

There were a number of issues in M66 that have been fixed for M67. Could you try using Chrome Beta/Dev/Canary channels and see if the issues are fixed? Over to sahel@ who is keeping track of these issues.

I encountered similar bug several times, after updating to Chrome 67.0.3396.18 64bit. Sometimes scrolling by mouse wheel stops working just in one tab. Scrolling by Up and Down keys from keyboard keeps working.

Might be a duplicate of #833254 (or that a duplicate of this). It's fairly easy to reproduce. It's reminiscent of #704410. Strange that Chrome keeps breaking in this way and not having the issues caught in testing or code review.

shanecourtrille@, thanks for clarifying that the issue goes away by disabling smooth scrolling. Can you resume scrolling if you move the mouse or wait for a second? It would be also helpful if you capture a trace using the following instructions and attach it here next time that it happens: https://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/submitting-a-performance-bug

So I've upgraded to Version 66.0.3359.139 (Official Build) (64-bit) and the problem is worse now. The change is now that about half the time when I go to the Amazon link I cannot scroll at all. The other half I can scroll for a bit and then it stops working. I am attaching the trace for the original problem where I can scroll for a bit and then it stops working to this comment. My next comment will have the trace for when I couldn't scroll at all. One thing to mention is I did this trace (trace_ScrollThenNoScroll) after my first trace (trace_NoScrollAtAll.json.gz) using the same chrome://tracing window so not sure if that keeps the content from the first trace as I assumed that clicking Record a second time would start fresh. Let me know if I need to do it again or not.

Here is the trace where scrolling didn't work at all.

To answer the earlier question from sindhu I still have the issue if I go incognito.
,

shanecourtrille@ thanks for the quick response. please answer these questions as well since it would help with diagnosing the issue faster. Have you tried in an incognito tab? also have you tried resetting all chrome flags to default form chrome://flags? Does it only happen on the Amazon link? Does it happen while using mouse, touchpad or both? What's the device information that you are using?
,
May 4 2018
Yes incognito has the same issue and I tried to reset all chrome flags. It happens on lots of other sites but the Amazon one is just more reliable. Wordpress sites also seem to be pretty reliable. I'm using the scroll wheel on my mouse.

shanecourtrille@ do remember when did the issue happen in each tracing? roughly around/after what seconds?
,
May 4 2018
From the trace in comment #10 seems like the scroll begin is ignored and that's why the rest of the GSU events get ignored too.
,
May 9 2018
Issue 840030 has been merged into this issue.

shanecourtrille@: could you try and see if the issue still exists in Chrome Canary channel which should be version 68.0.3425.0 or higher: https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/canary.html. If so, could you please attach a trace captured in that Chrome version. I've added some additional diagnostics to tracing that should help narrow down the cause.

Also seeing this issue on MacOS, Chrome 66.0.3359.139 and Canary 68.0.3425.0
,
May 10 2018
Trace for the above. Trackpad scroll has no effect on the scrollable element, element does receive the scroll event. Disabling threaded scrolling in flags makes the problem go away incidentally.
,
May 10 2018
Trace for the above using Canary. I _think_ it's on 68.0.3425.0, but can't be 100% as it crashes when I try to open chrome://settings/help
,
May 10 2018
Further to the above, the issue is not present on laptop monitor, but is present on external monitor (Apple Cinema Display, using mini displayport)
,
May 10 2018
Cleaner traces (less tabs)

counterpointster@ thanks for the update and traces, please file a separate bug for what you see on MacOS, since the bug report on comment #0 is about smooth scrolling on Windows and we don't have smooth scrolling on Mac, so even though the two bugs look similar the root cause of the two is different.
,
May 10 2018
Ah ok, sorry. So threaded scrolling and smooth scrolling are different things. Opened https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=841774

Thanks

Canary version still had the problem. Attached the trace. I stopped the trace within a second of the problem occurring.
,
May 14 2018
The trace in comment #26 is similar to the trace in comment #66 of crbug.com/797708. The root cause of both issues is that GSUs in smooth scrolling path get ignored since there is an ongoing animation that cannot be updated: https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/cc/trees/layer_tree_host_impl.cc?dr=C&l=3498 |
