All-black browser window(s) on startup

Project Member Reported by grt@chromium.org, Apr 13 2018

Issue description

67.0.3395.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit) (cohort: Clang-64)

For the last few days I've been seeing occasional all-black browser windows at process startup. See attached for the latest. Closing the window and re-opening it makes all well again. I took a quick scan and didn't see an obvious bug already on file for this.

Let me know if there's anything useful I can capture when this happens.

Marking as RB-Beta for now. I'm not sure if this should block dev or not. What do you think, abdulsyed@?

grt@, is it just the web content that's black or the complete window including browser UI?

Could you also attach contents of chrome://gpu on your machine?

Comment 7 by gov...@chromium.org, Apr 13 2018

M67 Beta promotion is coming VERY soon. Pls make sure to land the fix and request a merge into the release branch ASAP. Thank you.

I've been trying to repro this on a win machine but I'm not able to. The window starts completely white but the browser UI shows up in a second or so.

#4 from screenshot it looks like whole browser UI

I suspect a direct composition issue, since we've made some changes recently. Let me take a look.

grt@ chrome://gpu output from when this happens would be really helpful since it contains GPU process log messages.
Unable to reproduce the issue on Windows 10 chrome reported version#67.0.3395.0 & latest Canary-68.0.3397.0 as per C#0.Issue could be related GPU specific issue.

sunnyps@, Could you please take a look into this issue as it is marked as RB dev/beta issue.
Thanks..!

Comment 11 by grt@chromium.org, Apr 16 2018

The whole window is black -- no visible browser UI. It happened again today. Here's chrome://gpu, thought I don't remember if it happened in this particular browsing instance. Each repro has been on Chrome launch with session restore and 3+ browser windows opening up across different profiles. Only one window was affected last time -- the others were fine. Alt-F4 and then re-opening that profile's window resolved the issue.

I've never seen this issue until a few days ago and now it occurs daily. With about 50 tabs open in about 8 chrome windows, one background window frequently turns completely black - both UI and content. Closing the window and re-opening with Ctrl-Shift-T is a quick fix.
Less frequently, the content or part of the content (but not the UI) turns black. In this case, giving focus to the window refreshes the black content area. A screenshot of this second case is attached.

While the issue was occurring I noticed that a few additional log entries appeared at chrome://gpu. All but one chrome background window turned black.

Passthrough command decoder is enabled on your system, but I couldn't repro with that (--enable-features=DefaultPassthroughCommandDecoder) either.

The ANGLE shader warning is probably a red herring because I see it on my system too.

The "GpuProcessHostUIShim: The GPU process exited normally. Everything is okay." line might be for the unsandboxed GPU process that's launched to collect chrome://gpu information.

Also note that the last log has an ~13h gap between messages, 04/15/2335... vs 0416/1329...

The "GL_INVALID_OPERATION: Texture was not generated" errors are interesting because it implies a bunch of display compositor resources weren't drawn, which explains the symptoms.

Can you please share crash report ids from chrome://crashes?

Comment 16 by zmo@chromium.org, Apr 17 2018

grt@chromium.org: we can't reproduce it in house. Can you help bisecting? Since you can reproduce reliably on your side.

1) please run Chrome with --user-data-dir="some tmp dir", and see if you still have this issue with a clean profile

2) if in 1), you still can reproduce, then it has nothing to do with your profile, could you bisect and see which CL(s) caused the regression? https://www.chromium.org/developers/bisect-builds-py (I think there is an internal tool that gives more precise bisecting, if you want to try that, let me know, and I can find it out where it is)

Thanks for your help!

- first try at reproing with 68.0.3398.0 in my normal user data dir via chrome://restart did repro in one browser window
- repeated chrome://restart with the same setup fail to repro
- i have no new crash reports in a week, yet this has been happening within the last few days

I'll keep trying to get a consistent repro to be sure that a bisect will be fruitful. In the meantime, are there any particularly interesting breakpoints I should set in case I'm able to get one?

Comment 20 by zmo@chromium.org, Apr 17 2018

grt@: thanks for helping! No, we don't know the nature of this bug yet, so no suggestion on interesting breakpoints from me. Sunny, do you have any suggestions?

Cc: geoffl...@chromium.org jmad...@chromium.org
Jamie, Geoff, any insights on what scenarios could cause the "Texture was not generated" in ValidateBindTexture()?

https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/third_party/angle/src/libANGLE/validationES2.cpp?rcl=aa8b3982aeeb90c9d4f818117a6be1a6904def5a&l=2978
Well, what that error is saying is we're trying to use the ID of a Texture that ANGLE isn't tracking. It either was created with glGenTextures and then deleted, or was never generated with glGenTextures at all. It's possible there's a race condition perhaps, or a failure condition that is happening somewhere else then triggering this error.

I just tried chrome://restart and it happened again. Here's the latest from chrome://gpu (note the lack of the previous error messages):

Grabbing at straws:
- my session restore brought back 7 browser windows across four profiles
- only one window is affected
- i'm fairly sure it's the same window that was black the last time this happened
- i'm pretty sure it's not the window in which i visited chrome://restart

Thanks. Now at least the GL errors seem irrelavant

Just a wild try: can you run Chrome with --use-cmd-decoder=validating and then just use Chrome this way, and see if you still experience Chrome.

Without a reliable way to reproduce, it's not going to be easy for a fix.

Comment 26 by grt@chromium.org, Apr 17 2018

i'll keep this browser process alive (and that window open) for the time being in case anyone thinks of something useful to look at in the running procs. i'm reasonably well-versed in the ways of windbg, so fire away with zany requests.

based on past experience, i'm fairly confident that if i close the black window (alt-f4) and re-open it, all will be well.

GpuProcessHostUIShim: The GPU process exited normally. Everything is okay.
grt: It seems like sometimes you're on the Intel integrated GPU and sometimes on an NVIDIA Quadro card. Is this a laptop with dual GPU or a desktop machine?
M67 Beta promotion is coming VERY soon. Your bug is labelled as Beta ReleaseBlock, pls make sure to land the fix and request a merge into the release branch latest by 1:00 PM PT Friday, 04/20. Thank you.
FWIW Nvidia control panel has an option for "Preferred GPU" globally, and an application specific profile from Chrome. I suspect your system is set to auto since sometimes Chrome uses Intel and sometimes Nvidia. Can you switch to one or the other, and let us know if you can reproduce this?

Comment 31 by ghost...@gmail.com, Apr 18 2018

I get this on my desktop machine (one graphics card). The first window is fine but all the rest are black. I've been working around this by closing and re-opening the black windows which loads them non-black (although when I restart Chrome they're black again).

Could be Intel related. A lot of those errors are noise, not sure if the invalid mailbox name thing is relevant.
Just noticed that both reports are from Windows 10 build 16299 (Fall Creators Update) which is being rolled out internally.

Can the reporters please try --disable-direct-composition and let us know if it fixes the problem? I'll try to procure a Windows 10 machine with that build.

Comment 34 by ghost...@gmail.com, Apr 18 2018

--disable-direct-composition did not appear to fix it for me
#34:
Can you try a fresh profile by running Chrome with the --user-data-dir=C:\foo flag (use any temporary directory in place of C:\foo).

If it does reproduce on a fresh profile, can you try bisecting Chrome as described here: https://www.chromium.org/developers/bisect-builds-py

Please also paste the contents of chrome://version including the "Variations" list here.

grt@ can you also paste your variations here?
I failed to reproduce by restoring a session with 8 Chrome windows several times on MS Surface Book with Intel HD Graphics 520 running Windows 10 Version 1709 OS Build 16299.309.

Comment 37 by ghost...@gmail.com, Apr 18 2018

It didn't happen when I used --user-data-dir=C:\foo - I created two windows and added some tabs to each but when I closed the browser and reopened it, they restored properly.

I wouldn't think it would be, but possibly could be some shader caching related.
I tried --disable-direct-composition while the issue was occurring - it did not fix it for me either.

The issue went away after a few more restarts of chrome without --disable-direct-composition but it has been intermittent for me.
The issue returned when chrome was restarted while a 3d intensive game was running. It persists until the game is closed and chrome is restarted.

Comment 41 by grt@chromium.org, Apr 19 2018

My variations are up in https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=832538#c24.

I'm on a Lenovo P50. I sometimes have it docked with the lid closed and only using an external display. Other times, it's undocked and I'm using the built-in display.

Comment 42 by grt@chromium.org, Apr 19 2018

I don't see an option in NVIDIA Control Panel to set the preferred GPU. Where would I find it? The "Workstation" area only shows a Quadro M2000M.
Greg, it should be visible when right-clicking desktop. If not, you might have to install the NVIDIA drivers even to see the option.

Also, two things to try:

1. does the problem ever happen with Chrome Canary
2. does the problem go away if you upgrade your Intel drivers (though it would be good to confirm the problem only happens with Intel)
Also one other thing to try: if using a new profile directory solves the problem, does the flag --disable-gpu-program-cache also solve the problem for you?
Issue 834859 has been merged into this issue.
Labels: M-68
Dupe bug 834859 listed at #45 is reported by siggi@ on canary.
Cc: siggi@chromium.org
Siggi's bisect from the other issue:

"Minimize a browser window, quit the browser. Start the browser, and the minimized window(s) are now a black hole."
Thank you everyone. Pls continue to debug and try to have fix landed in trunk latest by 5:00 PM PT, tomorrow (Friday) so we can take the fix in for next week beta promotion.
I tried downloading the latest Chromium from the build archive:

https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?prefix=Win/552060/

And this didn't repro the problem.

Tried also with Windows x64:

https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-snapshots/index.html?prefix=Win_x64/552058/

So it has something to do with the user profile I suspect.

I tried signing into my accounts in the Chromium builds, but that didn't seem to work - any signin attempt didn't register, although the flow completed. Could use some help here.

I'm marking this for re-triage - I don't think this issue is related to the GPU process.

Following the repro steps in #49, start chrome with the flags either "--disable-gpu" or "--gpu-startup-dialog". You will see the black screen in both cases, even though the GPU process has no started or is entirely disabled and running on SwiftShader. It seems to me like the problem is happening somewhere earlier in the pipeline, maybe the browser process.
Mo, could this be related to RequestGpuSupportedRuntimeVersion()? Not sure if that's in the range of suspect versions.
Come to think of it.. that might require a working GPU process, so probably not (I think).

I tried bisecting per instructions in go/bisect-builds, no joy for some reason. I may be holding it wrong:

Siggi, are you able to repro this bug on latest M66 stable version 66.0.3359.117?
Re #56: I similarly failed to bisect on Windows for another issue; perhaps the cloud storage buckets are broken?

Re #57: I repro'd a variant of this on 66.0.3359.117, although the resumed tabs do paint after about 10 seconds. Windows 10 build 16299 NVidia Quadro K2200 Jan 23,2018 driver 23.21.13.9077. In contrast, the M68 tabs don't paint anything at all, ever.

Components: -Internals>GPU
re: comment 54: no, it's not related. Yes, that code is in an unsandboxed GPU process, whose missions are purely collecting info. That won't affect Chrome functions in general.

Comment 62 by grt@chromium.org, Apr 20 2018

Siggi: you're a genius. I didn't connect it to minimized windows. Here's the bisect:

You are probably looking for a change made after 67.0.3390.0 (known good), but no later than 67.0.3393.0 (first known bad).
CHANGELOG URL:
https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+log/67.0.3390.0..67.0.3393.0?pretty=full

I'll see if I can bisect further on Chromium builds.

Comment 63 by grt@chromium.org, Apr 20 2018

Huh. Totally not an overlapping range with Chromium

Cc: sky@chromium.org
+sky: I see the word "minimized" in r548851. Could that be responsible?

Here's the repro I'm using:
- chrome.exe --user-data-dir=foo
- C-n to open a second browser window
- chrome://settings to change "on startup" to "continue where you left off"
- minimize one of the two windows
- C-S-q to quit
- chrome.exe --user-data-dir=foo
- restore the minimized window and note that it can be none more black

Comment 65 by grt@chromium.org, Apr 20 2018

Scratch that "not overlapping" comment. The break was in 67.0.3391.0.

Nice find!
RE #59: I don't know if this is needed anymore, but yes, M67 Dev #67.0.3396.10 behaves like Canary, whereby the restored-from-minimized window is fully black and does not fix itself.

Thank you grt@.

sky@, could you ptal comment #66 and revert/fix this ASAP and request a merge to M67?.

Note: This is marked as M67 beta blocker, so fix/revert has to be merged in latest by 1:00 PM PT, Monday (04/23).

The revert ( https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/1022013 ) has landed on trunk.
I've been able to repro on Canary 68.0.3401.0, I'm building ToT to verify the revert fixes the issue.
In the mean time, I'm requesting merge of the revert to M67 (branch 3396), based on the confidence in comment #66.

NextAction: 2018-04-23
Thank you msw@. Pls update the bug with canary result on Monday morning.

Comment 77 by msw@chromium.org, Apr 20 2018

govind@, I'm OOO Monday, are you willing to approve merge of the revert now? (it's a pretty narrow low-risk CL)
I can't repro the defect on local debug builds before my revert, so I can't personally verify the fix right now. (is it release only?)
If we want to wait for Canary, someone else may have to merge while I'm on vacation and out of town on Monday.
