Issue descriptionChrome Version : 65.0.3325.181 OS Version: Windows NT: 10.0.16299 We're seeing a spike in reports from Windows users stating that Chrome's Translate feature has stopped working (they can no longer see the icon in the address bar to prompt a translation). +Groby - is this the same as crbug.com/826174 ? I can reproduce the sites that users mentioned. When I visit: ok.ru world.taobao.com, I am not offered a translate option/bubble/icon in the Omnibox. I can still right click to press "Translate to English", and then the icon appears in the Omnibox. I am on: 65.0.3325.181

Unable to reproduce the issue on Win-10 and mac 10.13.3 using chrome reported version #65.0.3325.181 and latest canary #67.0.3393.4. Attached a screen cast for reference. Following are the steps followed to reproduce the issue. ------------ 1. Navigated to http://world.taobao.com/ 2. Observed that translate bubble appeared in the Omnibox with "options" and "translate" button as expected. craigtumblison@ - Could you please check the attached screen cast and please let us know if anything missed from our end. Thanks...!!

@krajshree - Thanks for attempting to reproduce. That seems to be the same steps we're seeing reported, you didn't miss anything. @Melody Can you confirm that you're still seeing it? Maybe this was a server-side hiccup.

I can't reproduce this on the sites mentioned which lead me to think it's the Ranker at work suppressing UIs when we think the user will ignore them. Melody, Craig and others, could you have users do the following and report back whether this works: 1. Go to chrome://flags. 2. Search for "Enforce TranslateRanker decisions" 3. Switch from "Default" to "Disabled". 4. Restart your browser. Anthony - can we investigate whether the model is performing too aggressively in the wild? Also, can we prioritize the fix for crbug.com/600874 (showing the Translate icon in the Omnibar when we suppress the UI using the Ranker?) PS: I change the bug summary because it was misleading. The Translate feature in Chrome is not called auto-translate (which can be confused with when a user opts into automatic translations).

I have tried pages in Japanese, German, Russian. I have set and rest the standard advanced settings in Chrome and reset Chrome to defailt. No page translation option appears. Following the above suggestion I reset the TransalateRanker flag several times. With ""Enforce TranslateRanker decisions"" set to default, on and off the same behaviour is seen... no translation option. Also, there is this when trying an update: An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 4: 0x80070005 -- system level). Tested the links I posted above, using Beta 67, I still have no translation option on the URL bar, and yes the flags are set to translate pages not in the default language. English in my case. Google Chrome is up to date Version 67.0.3396.62 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/kiew-russischer-journalist-arkady-babchenko-in-der-ukraine-erschossen-a-1210217.html https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%91%D0%B0%D0%B1%D1%87%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BA%D0%BE,_%D0%90%D1%80%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%90%D1%80%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B4%D1%8C%D0%B5%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87 http://www.afpbb.com/articles/-/3176477

To c17/18 (steelhoof@gmail.com): you need to set the flag to Disabled, not Default. Craig - thanks so much for following up here. For the single person who this did not work for, can you double check she set the flag to "Disabled"? Anthony - after we fix 600874, we should 1) retrain the Ranker, and 2) add an escape hatch in settings (user shouldn't need to mess with flags).

I'm one of those for whom the flag change did not work I tried all settings I tried reboots we tried all kinds of things and it still continues. I am hopeful that the beta will convert to a version 67 real soon and that I can just say goodbye to the problem.

At c21: do you mean Chrome Beta or Stable? Beta has been on 67 since end of April and stable 67 is spinning out this week. Your beta should definitely be on 67. After you update to 67, check back in here if you continue to not see the Translate UI.

@c25: Hmm. Then that's a separate issue in 67. Can you got to chrome://settings/languages, click on the down arrow to show all settings, take a screenshot and attach it here? Additionally, can you go to chrome://translate-internals and do the same?
,
Jun 9 2018
@c25: also, can you still right click to Translate?

There is no option on the URL window to translate. With a Right-Click in the page there is an option to translate. This was an option I had never before noted. Will this be the option going forward? I ask because the old flag in the URL window was useful, easy to find, and offered an option to "Always Translate" which is wonderful when visiting pages in the same language repeatedly. With the Chrome 68 Beta the URL window offers an option to translate as well as the old popup behavior asking if a translation is desired. This is not currently seen in my Chrome 67 Version 68.0.3440.17 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) Version 67.0.3396.79 (Official Build) (64-bit)

If you click on that "x" next to german in chrome://translate-internals, you should get your translations from German back. And yes, the right click to translate option has always been available. It's handy when a page is not recognized to be in a different language.

We've identified that the Ranker was misbehaving and turned it off server side. This issue should now be fixed. |
