Issue descriptionChrome Version: 65.0.3325.181 OS Version: OS X 10.11.6 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Open Chrome 2. Open iTunes. 3. Play some music in iTunes. 4. With iTunes in the foreground, press play/pause, next or forward. What is the expected result? iTunes responds to media keys. What happens instead of that? Nothing whatsoever. Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if possible. - This began happening quite recently (this version or the one prior, I think). I can be sure of this because when I teach dance I have both Chrome and iTunes open at the same time and I depend on the media keys controlling iTunes. This problem began only since early February, 2018, at the earliest. - This bug prevents me from using Chrome at work. - This is on El Capitan, so it is not related to the High Sierra media key fiasco (see https://9to5mac.com/2017/11/15/how-to-fix-media-controls-high-sierra/). - The problem is certainly with Chrome, because a bizarre workaround is to open chrome://extensions, hamburger menu > Keyboard Shortcuts, and then click on one of the "Type a Shortcut" boxes. Now the media keys control iTunes as expected, as long as Chrome is waiting for you to choose a shortcut. UserAgentString: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.181 Safari/537.36

Unable to reproduce the issue on mac 10.13.3 using chrome reported version #65.0.3325.181 and latest canary #67.0.3393.4. Following are the steps followed to reproduce the issue. ------------ 1. Opened Chrome 2. Opened iTunes. 3. Play music in iTunes. 4. With iTunes in the foreground, pressed play/pause, next or forward. 5. Observed that itunes responded to media keys as expected. The issue seems to be reproducible only on El Capitan, 10.11.6 and ET team or MTV team doesn't have that mac os to test the issue. Hence, adding label TE-Hardware-Dependency. Thanks...!!

It happens that for my *other* job I am working at MTV-1395, so I might be able to help with that.

Do you have a Chrome extensions such as the Google Music one installed by any chance?

I was sure the answer was no, but in fact it got installed without my being aware thanks to the magic of Chrome Sync. And surprise, surprise: when I disable the Google Play Music app/extension, the problem goes away. Please go ahead and close this; I will file a bug against GPM instead.

Possible update: I found b/19938596, which notes that there seems to have been some change in the way Chrome handles requests for media keys from apps/extensions; it seems the GPM app is not entirely at fault here.

WontFix is reasonable, but in fact this turns out to be a dupe of https://crbug.com/396991 |
