This is a feature request. I'm the developer of the ColorfulTabs Firefox Addon. I've waited many years to see if Chromium will expose some Tab / Theme API to allow changing the color of tabs. With this bug filing, I'm humbly trying to explore the feasibility of such an API that would allow ColorfulTabs to be ported to Chrome.

Unique colors per tab allows a sub-conscious association with the tab and helps aid identification as well as usability and UX. ColorfulTabs has been very popular with the Firefox users and has also been distributed with tech magazines like Chip.de. As of now a buggy workaround is to insert a content script and create a pseudo-tab strip that tries to duplicate the tabs' functionality. I hope we can someday natively support ColorfulTabs.
