Kensington SD5200T USB-C dock doesn't work with Pixelbook

Project Member Reported by szager@chromium.org, Mar 23 2018

Issue description

I have a new Pixelbook, and I got the only USB-C dock on go/stuff that claims to be "universal":

https://mystuff.corp.google.com/stuff/items/1828

However, it doesn't seem to work with the Pixelbook. It does deliver power to the Pixelbook, but when I attached a monitor via display port and keyboard and mouse via USB-A, but none of them were recognized.

I have been using the same monitor and peripherals by plugging directly into my Chromebook Pixel 2 for a couple of years, with no problems.

Could you run chrome:system and attach the results of "modetest" plz?

Comment 3 by szager@chromium.org, Mar 23 2018

Do you mean with the peripherals attached, or just with the docking station attached? The peripherals are at home, so I don't have access to them now.

If none of the peripherals are recognized, then this most likely a problem with USB. Sameer should be able to triage.

Attached is the modetest output while the Pixelbook, monitor, keyboard and mouse are plugged into the docking station.

Components: OS>Systems
c5: yeah, both DP connectors are shown as "Disconnected"

66	0	disconnected	DP-1 0x0 0	65
...
71	0	disconnected	DP-2 0x0 0	70

Meaning that the DP logic doesn't even see electrical connection.
I concur with marcheu@ that this seems a larger problem (than Display).

I had a gnubby plugged into the other port on the Pixelbook when I generated that data. Is it expected that the gnubby doesn't show up? Could this be a problem with the Pixelbook rather than the docking station?

I tried plugging the monitor and peripherals directly into the Pixelbook, and they all work. So it seems like either a problem with the docking station, or a problem between the Pixelbook and docking station.

Attached is modetest with monitor and peripherals attached directly to the Pixelbook.

Sorry it took me so long to catch this, but this is 100% working as intended.

This dock is a Thunderbolt 3 dock, and we do not support Thunderbolt 3 alternate mode.

The dock itself is not compatible with the DP Alt Mode that our Chromebooks use.
Thanks for commenting. Are there any docks on go/stuff that will work with Pixelbook?
szager: The short answer is no. Docking stations like this are ridiculously complicated and in practice, everyone has made serious mistakes.

The longer answer is I am working with one vendor on correcting their mistakes and hopefully it will be on Stuff soon.

What features do you need in particular?
When I work from home, I connect to power, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and gnubby. Currently I have a Pixel 2 Chromebook, which has exactly the ports I need:

USB-C (1): Power
USB-C (2): USBC->DisplayPort dongle to monitor
USB-A (1): gnubby
USB-A (2): USB hub to keyboard, mouse

Since the Pixelbook only has the two USB-C ports, I need some kind of dock or hub to connect all that stuff.
