Google Sheets is slow to respond to input

Reported by joe.vann...@gmail.com, Mar 22 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.181 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open any Google Sheets document
2. Attempt to add or edit data, select cells etc
3.

What is the expected behavior?
The interface response is usually instant, and it still is using Safari.

What went wrong?
With this most recent Chrome update, the interface is now unusably slow. There's a full one second lag between keystroke and action.

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 65.0.3325.181 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.11.6
Flash Version:

I was working in the same Google Sheet a few minutes ago, and it was fine. Then I updated Chrome, and I have this problem. I rebooted to be sure, still there. I tried Safari, to rule out a problem on Google's end, and it works fine, as expected. It seems to be this Chrome build.

joe.vannucci@ Thanks for the issue.

Tested this issue on Mac OS 10.12.6 and Windows 10 on the reported version 65.0.3325.181 and the latest Canary 67.0.3379.0 by following the below steps.

1. Launched Chrome and opened Google Sheets.
2. Tried adding text, editing text and selecting cells on Google Sheets and no issues are seen. No lag can be observed while adding/editing/selecting cells.
Attached is the screen cast for reference.

Request you to retry the issue on a new chrome profile without any flags/extensions and update the thread with the observations.

Thanks..

I turned off all extensions, and restarted Chrome. Not sure what you mean by 'flags', or a new profile.

In the attached screen recording, you'll see that typing into a cell isn't affected. But press return, and there's a delay before the adjacent cell is activated.

joe.vannucci@gmail.com: Does this repro for other Google apps or only Google Sheets?
Seems to be only Google Sheets. Google Docs works just fine.

So far I had tested on a small spreadsheet. I forgot it wasn't working in Chrome, and opened a larger sheet, and noticed in addition to slow moving from cell to cell, pressing enter, etc, that scrolling is also very slow.

Adding Blink for further triage.
I have more information regarding this issue. If I reduce the size of the browser window, navigation and selection in Sheets appears as fast as it ever was. Normal. I tested this in a 1000 x 1000 pixel window.

I normally run the browser maximized, 1920 x 1200. In this configuration, Sheets is slow. This behavior just started after I updated recently. I've always run Sheets in a maximized Chrome window, and it worked fine. I'm hoping this will help you reproduce the issue.

Sounds like the regression is probably related to graphics performance.

@fserb: Could you check whether the slowdown is canvas-related?
I've been trying to repro that, but haven't been able so far.

@#4: Could you copy-paste the text from your chrome://version instead of a screenshot? We need to run the "Variations" strings through a tool, which is hard to do with a screenshot.

The problem, which persisted across several browser updates, resolved with one of the more recent updates. It's no longer an issue for me.
