cros tryjob fails for mysterious reason

Project Member Reported by vbendeb@chromium.org, Mar 16 2018

Issue description

I am trying to build an Eve image using a tryjob, invoking it as follows:

cros tryjob --debug -g '*587533' -g 959530 eve-full

for the reference, here are the patches posted on gerrit

https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/overlays/chromiumos-overlay/+/959530

https://chrome-internal-review.googlesource.com/c/chromeos/overlays/overlay-eve-private/+/587533

the build fails:

https://uberchromegw.corp.google.com/i/chromiumos.tryserver/builders/full/builds/455

and this apparently is the reason for the failure:

13:39:20: INFO: Translating result <class 'chromite.lib.patch.ChangeNotInManifest'>: CL:*587533 could not be found in the repo manifest.
Traceback (most recent call last):

as mentioned in the log:

https://logs.chromium.org/v/?s=chromeos%2Fbb%2Fchromiumos.tryserver%2Ffull%2F455%2F%2B%2Frecipes%2Fsteps%2FDetectRelevantChanges%2F0%2Fstdout

What does this error even mean, how can a patch be in the repo manifest which AFAIK a list of sha1s for various component git repos?

what am I doing wrong, why does the job fail?

I am seeing similar/same issue:
I have two patches [1][2], and the tryjob[3] for failed at stage PatchChanges with same error message.
I started the tryjob using command:
cros tryjob -b release-R69-10895.B -g *662471 -g 1173259 lakitu-release-tryjob

And the interesting error logs[4] are:
12:31:41: INFO: Skipping patch xueweiz:*662471:*9e37bd10 as it's not in manifest.
12:31:41: INFO: Skipping patch xueweiz:1173259:e307bc72 as it's not in manifest.
12:31:42: ERROR: Failed applying patches: CL:*662471 could not be found in the repo manifest.
CL:1173259 could not be found in the repo manifest.

That's interesting. I think I missed the original bug somehow.
