https://youtu.be/lAhHNCfA7NI

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Play any video online. Somehow noticeable in YouTube, super obvious in Pornhub ;)

It gets much worse if you scroll the mouse over the controls.

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
The video is super choppy, even when doing nothing else than watching it.

Did this work before? Yes

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? HTML5

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

es20490446e@ Thanks for the issue.

Tested this issue Ubuntu 14.04, 17.10 and Windows 10 on the reported version 65.0.3325.146 and the latest Canary 67.0.3375.0 and unable to reproduce the issue by following the below steps.

1. Launched Chrome and check if the Hardware Acceleration is Enabled in chrome://settings
2. Navigated to the above youtube link and could play the video without any issues.
3. Could not observe any pauses on the video while moving the mouse over the video controls.
Attached is the chrome://gpu details.

Request you to retry the issue by updating Chrome to the latest version and on a new chrome profile without any flags/extensions and update the thread with the observations.

Thanks..

I have also been having bad video freeze issues for the past week or so, under linux (recently updated Debian Buster 64-bit). Chrome version 65.0.3325.162.

For me the freezes are intermittent and can last from a few seconds to tens of seconds. Videos can play smoothly for several minutes or more, which makes testing this tricky...

Freezes don't occur if I disable hardware acceleration, as with the original poster. I have not at this time had a chance to adequately test other browsers, but during a brief test with Firefox ESR I didn't encounter issues. I have not personally observed mouse over causing more problems.

A few observations I've made:

1. Only video is affected, audio keeps going on normally.
2. I use the Fluxbox window manager, which doesn't do compositing on its own, with the compton compositor. If I disable compton, the freezes don't occur.
3. The freeze is affecting the entire web page, not just the video. So if I, say, mouse over other page elements while the freeze is happening, they do not (visibly) react.
4. Looking at the chrome://gpu data that's been posted, I noticed that both es20490446e and I are on a much newer version of the Mesa DRI than susan.boorgula (17.3.6 vs 11.2.0). Looks like 17.3.6 is a fairly recent release.

Attached my own chrome://gpu info.

It also happens with stock Chromium, without any profile or extension loaded.

The Linux distribution I'm using is Manjaro Deepin, stable branch. It's a rolling release which uses fairly new software, just a few weeks after published.

Re-checked this issue again on Ubuntu 14.04 on the latest Stable 65.0.3325.162 and unable to reproduce the issue.
By enabling Hardware Acceleration cannot observe any freeze on Youtube page by moving the mouse over the video controls and other elements on the page.

As per comment #4, as this issue is on Debian Buster 64-bit, adding 'TE-NeedsTriageFromHYD' and requesting someone from Inhouse team to please look into this issue and help in further triaging.

Note: Removing OS-Fuchsia as it was wrongly added by mistake in comment #3.

Thanks..

Tested the issue using #65.0.3325.162 and #65.0.3325.181 on Linux Debian rodete and could not reproduce the issue as per the steps mentioned below.

Steps:
1. Navigated to Youtube.com
2. Scrolled up and down using mouse scroll
3. Did not see any chopping.

Unable test this issue on 4.14.25 Debian or Manjaro Deepin, stable branch.

Attaching GPU info for the reference.

Removing Needs-Bisect label as issue isn't repro from our end.

Requesting Internals>Media team for further triaging of the issue.

Thanks!!

Comment 9 by elca...@gmail.com, Mar 22 2018

I haven't had a chance to test very extensively yet, but after my most recent Debian system upgrade I have not yet witnessed more video freezes. I'm now on Chrome version 65.0.3325.181. I noted the same system upgrade also contained at least updated libdrm packages, so I cannot say for sure if the problem was purely in Chrome or with other OpenGl/graphics driver stuff (although I only witnessed problems in Chrome).

Obviously I can't say for 100% certain that my issue was the same as the original poster's. (My freezes were more intermittent and I wouldn't describe it exactly as 'choppiness', and mouse activity didn't affect it as far as I could tell.)
I had the same behaviour as you, likely fixed in Mesa 17.3.7.

I will test it in a couple of weeks, when my distribution upgrades to that release.

As per comment#10, seems like issue is fixed on upgrading to Mesa 17.3.7.

@Reporter: Please let us know if issue is fixed. Adding Needs-Feedback label.

Thanks!

Comment 12 by elca...@gmail.com, Mar 23 2018

Alas, I have to amend my previous comment #9. Even though it seemed fine for a while, I have again encountered similar rendering freezes. So Chrome 65.0.3325.181 did not fix this issue.

To clarify, Debian Buster (aka testing) has not yet upgraded to Mesa 17.3.7, which was released only a couple days ago. So I do not know if that will fix this, or indeed if the issue is related to Mesa, although that certainly feels like a possibility. Hopefully the update will arrive soon, so I can test this.

The intermittent nature of this issue makes it annoyingly difficult to test, though...
Components: Internals>GPU
+internals>GPU since this seems related to hardware compositing on linux (where we don't use hardware decoders).
With PornHub.com is quite easy to reproduce, although it's not work safe. Perhaps in a break ;)

Anyway I have also seen the following Mutter memory leaks, which take all the memory and the system slows down:

https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/03/gnome-shell-has-a-memory-leak-and-it-might-not-be-fixed-for-ubuntu-18-04-lts

I don't know if that could be related. Which desktop environment are you using?

It sounds like maybe an issue with Mesa 17.3.6?
It's also not clear that it's a regression in Chrome (as opposed to the users's system/drivers) - @submitters, could you confirm?

There's a few other things you could do to help pinpointing this:
- install the intel-gpu-tools package, and after a freeze run 'intel_error_decode' as root. It could say that there's no error, or dump a bunch of information (which would indicate a driver bug, but that information may be useful for debugging it)
- if you get in a state where the freeze is somewhat reproducible, please capture a trace, following the "TL;DR" instructions at https://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/trace-event-profiling-tool/recording-tracing-runs#TOC-Capture-a-trace-on-Chrome-desktop and attaching the trace here.
I'll test.
any update from reporter@?

Comment 21 by elca...@gmail.com, Apr 9 2018

I cannot speak for the original reporter, but I have actually recently encountered one or two similar looking freezes in Firefox ESR. Which seems to point to this possibly not being an issue in Chrome. Although I have encountered issues in Chrome MUCH more frequently, so I dunno. I can confirm that updating to Mesa 17.3.7 didn't help.
The NextAction date has arrived: 2018-04-10
I'll test today, and let you know.
After various freezes, entering into the Terminal "sudo intel_error_decode", shows "No error state collected".

I continue testing...
Just adding my issue 831061 feedback, which seems to be the same issue. As below:

"Yes, issue 822549 sounds like the same. The biggest things I would add are:

- On my system, Firefox is absolutely not impacted. Only Chromium and Chrome. I've even seen the first time use Chrome/Chromium animation freeze.
- It happened on my Ubuntu Budgie 17.10 system only last night after a Chrome update downloaded, but happened on my Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 system the week before, again after an update, both Chrome Beta, but again, non beta Chromium also impacted.
- Opening the Chrome/Chromium task window eliminates the problem, closing that window makes it return.

Would it help if I screen capture videoed the problem?"
Probably the video would not be recorded properly, but you can try... perhaps with a second device.

anybody in GPU team can take a look?
Just made the screencast of rickroll video on pornhub with my phone, hope it safe for work enough.
https://youtu.be/qoRvcDhGJGw

The freeze is on 00:21. Actually video playback on Ubuntu 18.04 is completely unusable.
Components: -Internals>Media
video H/W decoding is not available on Linux. give to GPU team since this is H/W compositing related.
Still getting this on Ubuntu 18.04 both with Chrome Stable 69.0.3497.100 and Chrome Dev 71.0.3569.0.
I found a fix without any throwbacks!

It's sufficient to start chromium with the flag --disable-gpu-vsync and the problem completely goes away.

It's possible to make chromium start with this flag by default, just execute this command in the terminal, restart chrome and the issue will be gone forever:

sudo sh -c 'echo "CHROMIUM_FLAGS=--disable-gpu-vsync" > /etc/chromium-browser/customizations/10-gpufix'
I'm no longer seeing the problem on a rolling distro.
