a11y: web notifications not announced |
|||||
Issue descriptionChrome 67 on Windows 10 with JAWS 2018 and NVDA 2017.4 Not applicable to Chrome OS, alerts are read there. We need to review Mac + VoiceOver as well. Steps to repro: # Generate web notifications inside a browser page using this example page, allowing notifications, and pressing example notification https://web-push-book.gauntface.com/demos/notification-examples/ Expected: notification is read Actual: notification is ignored, screen reader user has no way to know they are happening This affects Google Calendar notifications such as appointment reminders.

This is a problem not just with calendar notifications, but with any notifications, such as those from websites. I'm using NVDA, and I never know when notifications are showing.

Hi Lanie, If you have some more example webpages with notifications, please feel free to reply here with a list. So far we have Calendar and the notification example site listed above. We can investigate other sites with Chrome to make sure the bugs there are the same root cause. Thanks, Laura

Hi. I believe this is happening with YouTube, Google+, Facebook, WhatsApp Web, and notifications from extensions, such as Pushbullet and Join, which is a Pushbullet alternative. --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. http://www.avg.com

Update comment from dtseng@ What you should observe is (with passwords, as example): - alert regarding whether you want Chrome to save a password; press alt+shift+a to show - focus announcement on the web contents We need both spoken in its entirety. Same case for calendar alerts.

Note to dev working on this bug, please also consider this question if it applies to this bug or if this needs to be split into another bug and documented from the Hangouts/Voice side: How do you answer a Google Voice or Hangouts call on a Chromebook? Do you have to find the call in the notifications, or is there a keyboard shortcut of some kind?

A user should also be able to do a sweep of the entire screen to check for notifications and not only have access to them at the time they appear. An example is if a screen reader user is presenting the screen for a webinar, that user would want to make sure that participants don't see any notifications on the screen visually that are still on screen due to past notifications.

Another site to add to the list is Slack which can also send notifications on incoming chats.
