Place back and forward button together

Project Member Reported by yanmin@google.com, Mar 2 2018

Issue description

Device name: Pixel XL

From "Settings > About Chrome"
Application version: 64.0.3285.137
Operating system: Android 8.1.0

My friend (iPhone user) used my Android phone just now and want to provide a piece of feedback on the UI. The placement of back and forward button are very counter-intuitive. On desktop and in iOS chrome browser, the back/forward button are together. But on android, the back button is the system provided, while the forward button is hidden in the menu. My friend took quite a while to find the back button.

Also, chrome iOS supports swiping on the edge to navigate between pages. Will that be a feature on android in the future?

Sorry , I mean my friend took quite a while to find the forward button. On a personal side, I've been using Android for a long time, but didn't realize there's a forward button hidden in the menu until a month ago.

This is a PM/UX question:

Nick, are there or are there likely to be in the future any considerations for adapting Android UI for iOS users?

Nick, actually the question is the opposite rather than Android UI for iOS what we're looking for is the back and forward gesture on Chrome Android similar to how its implemented in Chrome iOS. Both platforms could gain from dedicated backwards and forward navigation buttons. On Android its combined with System back button and doesn't make sense. Another idea for repurposing the system back button is to bring up the tab view or restore a closed tab. Thank you!
