Search box and Doodle disappears when entering a character in NTP search box

Reported by fschlues...@trinityutica.com, Feb 27 2018

Issue description

When Chrome is slow to startup, load a page, respond to your actions, uses
too much memory, drains the device's battery quickly, becomes warm with use
(or non-use), is eating up your bandwidth, or generally not performing how
you would like, this is the right place to file a bug. For any other
issues, please use a different template.

When filing a Speed bug, it's important to attach a trace
(https://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/submitting-a-performance-bug)
so that we can better investigate the issue.

Please specify the type of device and operating system (and version) where
the problem occurs.

By using this template, you ensure it will be looked at by the right folks
triaging Speed bugs. However, there is no SLA/SLO for fixing bugs or
delivering features. Prioritization of this report is at the discretion of
the Speed team. If you disagree with the assessment, please state your case
in the bug so we can reassess.
When u press space bar on homepage the google logo goes away and so does the searchbar In conclusion, GOOGLE HATES ME AND WANTS ME TO QUIT.

Thanks for the help

Summary: Search box and Doodle disappears when entering a character in NTP search box (was: Google no worko)
Targeting all desktops for now as we were able to repro on a Mac and a Chromebook.

It seems like this may be WAI, but it's pretty jarring when a space is entered in the search box since no suggestions appear.

Thanks for reporting this. I was able to reproduce it on the current stable and canary builds. It's also present on stable 63.

cc'ing treib@ for historical context. Is this a known behavior?

BTW: I don't think this fits the requirements of a performance bug, so I've removed the label.

I'm pretty sure this is working as intended though I also find it somewhat jarring. I can see why the fakebox disappears when the focus "moves" to the omnibox but it's curious that the doodle disappears as well.
Labels: -Needs-Feedback
Yep, this has been the case since ~forever, and it is intentional.

It makes sense that the fakebox vanishes, since the actual input is going to the Omnibox. Less sure about the logo/doodle, I guess that vanishes because it'd look weird if just the fakebox from the middle of the page goes away?
So generally I'd say this behavior makes sense, but for Space in particular (where no Omnibox dropdown appears) it's indeed weird. I guess we could add a special case to not hide the fakebox and logo?

(Longer-term, i.e. for the next NTP redesign, IMO we should just get rid of the fakebox. It creates so much confusion, so many weird edge cases...)

Fixing the Fakebox is part of the long-term plan but it's more complex ux/product wise than one'd think - we can chat more offline if you're curious about our thinking.

I'll mark this as WAI but we'll keep this in mind for NTP redesigns.
