Implement animated icon transition for play/pause?

Project Member Reported by rachelis@chromium.org, Feb 26 2018

Issue description

We have an animated treatment for play/pause. While we don't have animated transitions for all the other icons, it may make sense to implement this one given it's high visibility / usage and separation from the other icons.

Amyroberts to make a decision before passing this off to eng :)

We should evaluate the icon animations in the context of the other control motion work
being implemented. The cross fade on the white play/pause background may be too quick for the animations to be noticeable. +helene to weigh in.
Yes, play/pause should be the one to be animated for its high visibility, usability and unique centered position. In the larger context, it'd be fine this were the only animated icon in the player. If we had to choose a single icon to have animation, this would be the one.
Helene, let's chat through specifics. Current transitions are looking like this (attached). While I like the animated icons, I'm concerned that they'll fade out too quickly to be meaningfully animated.

Spoke to Amy and there is indeed no need for an animated play / pause icon with this current interaction model.

The pause/play animation was needed in an interaction where a tap in the content area brought up the controls, but the video kept playing. Whereas here, tapping on the content area pauses the video in addition to bringing up the player controls.
