chrome:// URLs don't have an icon when typed into the omnibox

Reported by 93m4qau...@gmail.com, Feb 25 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/66.0.3354.0 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Type chrome://settings into the omnibox.
2. No gear icon - just a blank page icon.
3. Type chrome://bookmarks into the omnibox.
4. No star icon - just a blank page icon.
5. Type chrome://chrome into the omnibox.
6. No Chrome logo - just a blank page icon.

What is the expected behavior?
Omnibox suggestions for chrome:// URLs should carry the page's favicon.

What went wrong?
Just a blank page icon doesn't look that good.

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 66.0.3354.0 Channel: canary

When you actually open these chrome:// URLs, they do have a favicon (as intended). The problem is that they do not have a favicon when showing as suggestions in the omnibox.

Able to reproduce this issue on Mac 10.13.3, Win-10 and Ubuntu 14.04 using chrome latest stable #64.0.3282.186 and latest canary #66.0.3355.0.
This is a non-regression issue as it is observed from M60 old builds.

Hence, marking it as untriaged to get more inputs from dev team.

Thanks...!!
This issue appears to be fixed in the latest Chromium development build (but not yet canary). As such, this issue can be closed as WontFix.

A clarification. This is currently working as intended. All URL navigation suggestions are shown with a page icon, regardless of whether they are chrome:// URLs or not. We could special-case the icon shown for chrome:// URLs but I don't think that's worth the effort or added complexity.

Reporter, what you're probably seeing in recent builds is a new feature that shows the favicon for all URL navigations. This is not guaranteed to launch but we're currently experimenting with it and may launch soon. See http://crbug.com/794201 for more details.
Issue 794201 doesn't seem to be public, so the original reporter (and I) can't see it :(
It's because the Chromium project (really, an arm of Google) is paranoid and keeps about 1/3 of their bugs private. That's why Chromium being an open source project is a total lie.
I apologize for pointing at the non-public issue, that's obviously not very helpful. You can try the feature for yourself by enabling chrome://flags/#omnibox-ui-show-suggestion-favicons. Attached is a screenshot showing what the suggestions look like with the feature enabled.

I've seen that feature before.
