Out of curiosity, what is the use case for this? Is it just a simpler way to set a poster?

Able to reproduce this issue on reported version 64.0.3282.140, on latest stable 64.0.3282.186 and latest canary 66.0.3353.0 using Mac 10.13.3, Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 10. i.e; Seeing grey gradient as video background color.

This issue is seen from introduction of Modern media controls flag in M64. Hence considering this issue as Non-Regression and marking as Untriaged.

It seems to work on Safari and Firefox so we should probably fix this but not a very high priority as I would be surprised many websites rely on this.

Dark-themed sites might have an unpleasantly broken UI/UX while loading the videos and/or posters due to the change.
Some users apply a global dark/night mode theme via an extension to all sites.
That's like millions of users, especially those with a slow connection.
