No indication which tab is open

Project Member Reported by abdulsyed@chromium.org, Feb 21 2018

Issue description

Chrome Version: 64.0.3282.167
OS: Mac 10.12.16

What steps will reproduce the problem?
I have a lot of tabs open. Anytime with lots of tabs and by clicking a link which opens in a new tab, the correct tab is not selected on the top (when in full screen mode).

What is the expected result?
It should be clear which tab is selected.

What happens instead?
No indication for which tab is selected.

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.

First screenshot above shows how a tab is clearly highlighted.
Second screenshot shows the problem, where it's unclear which tab is selected.
It looks to me like you might be in overflow state and the opened tab is actually off the right side of the strip, in which case there'd be nothing to highlight? Or is that not the case?

Is this Mac-only? If so it might be "legit bug but WontFix because of MacViews making the Mac tabstrip obsolete".

abdulsyed@ Thanks for the issue.

Tested this issue on Mac OS 10.12.6 on the latest Canary 66.0.3350.0 and reported version 64.0.3282.167.

Opened many tabs on Chrome in full screen and on opening a link in a new tab, the tab is not selected.
The same behavior is seen if chrome is not in full screen as well.
Attached is the screen cast for reference.

This behavior is observed from M60 chrome builds.

Request you to check and confirm if anything is missed from our end in triaging the issue.

Thanks..

@pkasting - I don't think that's exactly the case, that is' in overflow state. I'm just opening a new tab, and the assumption is that the proper tab is always highlighted.

I haven't tested yet on Windows (don't have a working machine). susan.boorgula@ - can you please test this on Windows and linux as well?
Looking at the video in #3, I believe the issue I raised is different. In the video, it is clear that the main "google.com" tab is still easily highlighted. However, if you look at my screenshots, you can see that there is no tab highlighted. @pkasting - I can show this to you in person.

abdulsyed@ Retried the issue again on Windows 10, Mac OS 10.12.6 and Ubuntu 14.04 on the latest Stable 64.0.3282.186 and Canary 66.0.3352.0 and able to reproduce the issue.

Able to reproduce this issue by opening new tabs continuously and then highlight is lost on the tab.
Attached is the screen cast for reference,

This behaviour is observed from M60 Chrome builds.

Thanks..

Comment 6 is what I was describing in comment 2: going into overflow state. There's no current way to highlight anything here, so this would be expected.

If this is what's going on for you, Abdul, then there is currently no fix, and this would be a dupe of bug 188.

Mac triage: yup, this is a known issue and a duplicate of the venerable issue 188.
