I'm seeing the same.
I just had to close chrome completly cause even with all tabs closed the GPU Process took around 3 GB of RAM. My computer is getting slower and slower until I quit Chrome.

I now disabled HW acceleration and it seems like the GPU Process memory usage is staying low now but I'm not sure if that's just cause I haven't used it for that long since chrome restart. Will test further.

Chrome: 64.0.3282.167
OS: Windows 10 1709

I disabled the HW acceleration as an attempted fix from what I read on other forums. However, after I disabled it I incurred the same problem.

When you say "Open Chrome to Google's home screen" what do you mean exactly? Are you looking at the new tab page or some other website? Also can you go to chrome://gpu/, right click and hit "Save As" and upload that here?

My home screen for Chrome is the basic google.com page. So when I click the chrome icon on my desktop it opens to the google search page with the google doodle above it.

The GPU process memory usage shouldn't climb steadily like that (obviously). If you are seeing the same behaviour with --disable-gpu then that flag isn't required and will have some impact on performance.

Do you have any extensions enabled? Can you try disabling all of them in chrome://extensions/ and then restarting Chrome. If you're still seeing the steady increase in GPU process memory usage with one tab open on www.google.com, how quickly is GPU process memory usage increasing?

The only extension I have open is ad blocker plus. However, I know it isn't ad blocker because the GPU process doesn't climb steadily every time I open chrome. For example this morning I opened chrome with only google.com open and GPU stayed around 12,000-14,000kb. I almost always out of habit open chrome's task manager the minute I open chrome to check what the GPU is going to do. If I see it increasing I will kill it. I know within about 5-10 seconds whether the GPU is going to steadily increase or not. Sometimes I can open chrome multiple times in one day and the GPU always stays in that 12-14kb range. Other days the GPU will steadily increase each time I open chrome. 

After my first chrome session this morning I had to leave for a meeting. I left my computer for about an hour and I closed chrome before I left. When I came back I opened chrome to check something, but got pulled away before I opened a new tab or the task manager to look at the GPU and I left the google.com home screen running. I was gone for about 5 minutes, came back, and immediately did what I needed to do on chrome without checking the task manager to see what the GPU was doing. Within 30 seconds without any warning my screen went black (happens sometimes when I fail to notice the GPU has increased to a very high number) and when it came back on I got one the warnings I normally get. This warning is weird because it doesn't have a box that pops up, it's just an icon on the bottom tool bar that looks like the image I attached below. This essentially tells me my computer is about to lock up or is already locked up; other times it allows me to open chrome's task manager to kill the GPU, which is normally the issue. I was able to open chrome's task manager this time and it showed my GPU at around 1.3GB of memory. 

So to give you a sense of the speed it can have, it was able to climb to over a GB of memory within 6 minutes of just sitting on google.com. Though I have seen it increase to 500,000 - 900,000kb within a minute. After having to restart my computer I opened chrome's task manager right away and within 5 seconds the GPU was using about 200,000kb and was steadily increasing before I killed it. As I am writing this now my GPU hasn't moved from around 14,000kb.

Hopefully this all made sense. I appreciate you looking into this.

Can you share the contents of chrome://crashes with us?

If you could, please capture a memory infra trace as described here: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/lkcr/docs/memory-infra/

The trace should be captured around the time you experience this problem, when memory usage is high. The trace doesn't have to be very long, few seconds should suffice.

Tested the issue using #64.0.3282.167 and #65.0.3325.146 on Win 7 and Win 10 and could not reproduce the issue as per the steps mentioned in original comment. No Crash is seen.

Below is the attachment of GPU details of the tested machine.

Removing Needs-TestConfirmation label as issue doesn't repro from TE end.

@mark.huber394: Request you to update your Chrome to latest version #65.0.3325.146 and check if you still face the Crash and also respond to comment #12.
