[User Feedback - Stable] NTP: Thumbnails are missing for users with smaller screens |
||||||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 65.0.3325.51, 64.0.3282.119, 64.0.3282.140 OS Version: OS X 10.13.3 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Open new tab page 2. Expect to see all 8 thumbnails 3. Only 4 thumbnails display 4. Resize browser window or zoom to force the behavior (they disappear in real-time). Hey all, We're seeing reports from the forums that users are missing their thumbnail tiles on the new tab page. Thread examples: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/LTMYWpzy05Q https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/kxlwCnDlHWk In most cases, the users are reporting that this is happening at their default resolution. Zooming out can fix the issue and bring all 8 back, but that isn't an ideal workaround. This could be related to bug 787853 and/or bug 755761. Thanks!

craigtumblison@ Thanks for the issue. Tested this issue on Windows 10, Mac OS 10.12.6 and Ubuntu 14.04 on the latest Stable 64.0.3282.167 and Canary 66.0.3347.0 and able to reproduce the issue. On launching chrome and resizing the new tab window, can see that the thumbnails are disappearing. Issue is inconsistent as on launching the first new tab, can see all the 8 thumbnails, but on a next new tab can observe that the thumbnails are disappearing. Attached is the screen cast for reference. Hence unable to provide the bisect info as the issue is inconsistent. Marking this as Untriaged for further updates from Dev team. Thanks..

I see only 4 thumbnails in the NTP using 2 laptops with smaller screens for all of Stable 64.0.3282.167, Beta 65.0.3325.51, and Dev 66.0.3343.3 Chrome forum references: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topicsearchin/chrome/new$20tab$204$20thumbnails%7Csort:date

This is bug 755761 / bug 705655 and is working as intended, you can find background on those bugs. That said, we are getting a number of reports about this, so it might be worth revisiting that decision. Assigning to new NTP PM owner.

I'm using Yahoo search as my default because of this issue. Google should reduce the size of their icon picture and eliminate the unless search bar. Why have a search bar if the navigation bar act as a search bar.

The problem is simple. At whom the small diagonal of the screen, at that the bottom number disappears or two lines of icons. If you make a scale of 80% they appear. This was due to the disabling of the scrolling. Make the main icons smaller and smaller and all fit.
,
Feb 20 2018
Why not enabling scrolling? If I had a bigger screen I wouldn't need to zoom in. I'll keep using Yahoo until Goolge fixes the problem.

I am having the issue of missing thumbnails. They appear momentarily and then vanish and I have an unsolicited memo about a Doodle 4 Google art contest. Please keep me informed about a full solution. I do not want to change but if this goes on I shall have to.I have done a total reinstall of Google Chrome twice and trying to solve this has taken significant time. Even an extremely helpful but sadly ineffective support person from Google phone support could not resolve.
,
Feb 27 2018
OK I only have 4 thumbnails at the moment. They are missing at 100% ZOOM.Reducing zoom to 90% lets me see 4 thumbnails. I find the message about the art contest extremely irritating and personally believe its presence is limiting the available space for thumbnails and that its removal would most likely restore my thumnail display to its normal 8 thumbnails at 100%. Get rid of this Doodle 4 Google notification.

I had gone from having all 8 thumbnails, to 4, and now to none in the last week and a half. I zoomed out and now see all 8, but is anyone working on fixing this for good? My screen needs to be zoomed out 75% to have all 8 thumbnails show, and I've reinstalled chrome twice, deleting all my data and saved passwords thinking it was a problem with my computer.
,
Feb 27 2018
Hey all. We're doing a redesign of how most visited sites appear on the new tab page which will address the resizing concern. I'm going to close this bug as won't fix (since we won't be fixing the thumbnails but moving towards a better overall solution). Thanks for your reports - we've heard you loud and clear.
,
Feb 28 2018
Closing the bug seems like a cop out! Are you going to inform us when you have resolved the basic problem?

I'm not able to see my thumbnails on chrome home screen regardless of zoom. What is the status of this? I need my thumbnails back. Please help!
,
Feb 28 2018
I went from 8 to 4 to none.
,
Feb 28 2018
Ditto. Went to 8 to 4 to none. 4 flash on when chrome is opened then disappear. Help!!
,
Feb 28 2018
This is really annoying. I want my two rows of thumbnails back because I use both of them. Please fix this ASAP, setting it to "wontfix" is a cop-out. Fix it dammit!

8 to 4 is fine. But, 4 to None ... u kidding me?

I have 4 thumbnails at the moment. I want back 8.

As per offline discussion, Ramya - please roll back Marc's change that's causing the tiles to disappear. Copying in Marc's input: For the remote NTP, it'll be a partial rollback of cl/175028292 - as a quick fix, it should be enough to turn the "chrome_search.chrome_64_hide_offscreen_tiles" flag off (need to verify that this doesn't break anything). For the local NTP, the CL to undo is https://crrev.com/c/726079. Probably best to do this after the server-side change is live, to avoid any broken intermediate states. Issue reporters - you should have your tiles back *soon*.

The version 65.0.3325.146 has been released stabile x64. Error with 4 icons of sites instead of 8 remained. Is it difficult to fix such a trifle? Return scrolling or reduce the spacing between the doodle and the top panel (highlighted in red).

I completely agree with this comment. Treat the disease and not the symptom of the disease. It is my opinion that the fundamental issue was created by a desire on the part of Chrome browser management to maximise the available space for Google to promote whatever they chose to promote at the expense of the individual user choice. Ultimately this will encourage users to migrate to alternative browsers.
,
Mar 7 2018
Even more than just migrating to alternative browsers. Those of us using a Chromebook, and therefore being stuck with Chrome for a browser, will think twice about getting another.
,
Mar 7 2018
The rollback is server side (not tied to a particular release) which means not all locations have gotten the change yet. Thanks for posting and sharing your thoughts.

Mar 7 2018
FYI: I've filed bug 819781 which may be related to the efforts to revert the changes listed above. Users are reporting that NTP wallpapers (from Chrome themes) are being cut off with the M65 rollout. Thanks!

Today the lower row appeared. It's great, but it does not fit on a 15.6-inch monitor. Please reduce the indent between the top panel and the doodle. Thank you
,
Mar 8 2018
My thumbnails disappeared two hours ago. However, all of my thumbnails are back, but they do not fit on my 12-inch screen. Is there any way that the indent between the doodle and search engine can be decreased so that all of the thumbnails can be seen?

The latest version (65.0.3325.146, build f926414266f7aecb5ec1bf1b5f93f8716976ceef-refs/branch-heads/3325@{#669}) seems to have fixed the issue entirely. I can now set the zoom to 100% and scroll down the new tab page to find my bottom 4 thumbnails. Props to the Chrome Development Team, but they shouldn't have taken this long to fix a simple issue that only required them to re-implement an original piece of code. Cheers.

After enjoying the fixed new tab page for a few days, the dev team has apparently reverted to the 4-thumbnail version again.
,
Mar 12 2018
Well, #819781 appears to be fixed, at the cost of losing the second row of thumbnails again.
,
Mar 12 2018
I noticed this has to do with the ART that is shown above. Nothing against the beautiful art pieces that replaces the Google logo... but hey - give me my two rows of functional thumbnails any time pleaseeeeee. Last two days scrolling was enabled and I thought that was a good compromise. Now it's gone again. (I'm running with 125% zoom btw.. because the search results details are just too small for me at 100% for title page.)
,
Mar 12 2018
Already at what time I speak. Make indents between the logo and the top line less. And that's all.

Apologies for the regression to fewer thumbnails that some of you have seen in the past couple of days. We've been working on a fix that should restore 8 thumbnails on smaller / low resolution screens, while preserving theme backgrounds on high resolution screens. This server-side change will roll out over the next few days.
,
Mar 13 2018
As a wish. Make smaller omissions so that both doodle and tumbnails are placed on the screen without scrolling. Thank you

Tested this issue on Windows 10, Mac OS 10.12.6 and Ubuntu 14.04 on the reported version 65.0.3325.51 and latest Canary 67.0.3370.0 as per comment #2. Able to reproduce this issue on the reported version 65.0.3325.51 and the issue is fixed on the latest Canary 67.0.3370.0. Can observe 8 thumbnails on NTP. Attached is the screen cast for reference. Hence adding TE verified labels as the fix is working as intended. Thanks..
