PDFs displays with a strange, Stargate style font

Reported by danf...@gmail.com, Feb 13 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/64.0.3282.140 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
http://www.africau.edu/images/default/sample.pdf

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open certain PDFs (see above)
2. Observe the odd font choice
3. Download the file and open in Adobe Reader XI and see that it looks just fine

What is the expected behavior?
As much as I enjoyed Stargate back in the day, I would rather my PDFs look correct.

What went wrong?
The PDF's text displays in an odd, "Stargate SG1" approved font.

Does it occur on multiple sites: Yes

Is it a problem with a plugin? N/A

Did this work before? Yes Not sure

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 64.0.3282.140 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version:

I've browsed my system fonts and don't even have a font similar to the one in the PDF.... very strange!

Hi, thanks for your help.
Issue still occurs for me on Canary 66.0.3346.4 on Windows 10. Made sure regular Chrome was not running.

Can you try 66.0.3347.0 Canary or newer? I just fixed bug 809888 , but the test in comment 4 is one version too early.

I too, approve the Stargate style font. ;-)

Just to clarify, "still looks the same" in comment 8 means... "still broken with a bad font substitution" ?

I can't reproduce the issue here. Looking at the PDF, it does not have any embedded fonts. Therefore it has to ask the PDF Viewer to pick out a font that matches Helvetica and sustitute in that font. On most computers, asking for Helvetica will get some font that looks like Helvetica, but there is no guarantee.

Can you try this on a different Windows computer, maybe a friend's, and see if their computer exhibit the same problem? If not, you'll need to look and see what fonts are installed on your computer. Is there one that have the Stargate style?

I fixed it!

Super weird.. There was a font, called Alien5.ttf, that was showing up only in programs (Word, Gimp, etc), but not in the Windows fonts folder. I deleted it using a elevated cmd prompt from \windows\fonts, restarted Chrome, and now all is well.

Not sure why Chrome chose it, out of all the fonts, as a replacement for Helvetica...

Anyway, I've attached it if you want to investigate more, and/or are just a big Stargate fan and want to print out some posters or something. :)

Thanks for your help!

Thanks. I'll try out the font at some point and see what happens. Glad we found the issue and have a way to avoid it.
