What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go to (sorry, PDF behind paywall)
2. Look at second word of abstract

What is the expected result?

The word should be "purification"

What happens instead?

The word displayed is "puriAEcation" or something like it.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if

Similar ligature problems are not that rare in PDFs displayed in Chrome, but I am having a hard time finding more examples without making this my project for the afternoon. If reviewers are skeptical, I can dig them up.

Sorry I am unable to log into the link can you send me the PDF file for me to view.
Comment 3 by, May 18 2011
Here is the kicker: Downloading the original PDF from the link I sent, the font problems are evident (PhysRevA.54.3824.pdf).

If I use Skim (a PDF reader for OSX) and "print" the first page as a PDF, when chrome views that page there are no font problems (firstpage.pdf).

This may hint at what is going wrong.

I cannot reproduce this issue on MAC OS 13.0.767.0 can you upgrade .
Let me know if you still get this issue
Comment 5 by, May 23 2011
Tried on 13.0.773.0 canary

PDFs look exactly the same (same config as above), so yeah, still get exactly the same issue.

This problem does not arise in all PDFs but in particular seems to strike PDFs prepared by the American Physical Society. The bug has been there for a long time (since the Mac PDF viewer was first introduced, I think). APS PDFs are the only place I have seen it, which may give a clue to the source of the problem.

Here's a non-paywalled example file.

Note the the same paper, formatted on does not have the problem.

One thing to note is that the PDFs print without this problem, directly from Chrome.
Issue 79021 reports the same problem and has an additional example file.
The problem is not specific to APS generated PDF files.

Here is an a example of a PDF from the arxiv which has the ligature problem
Issue 59338 also appears to be the same issue.

Preview, Safari, and Adobe Acrobat Pro all correctly render the ligatures (under Mac OS 10.6.8), but Chrome's built-in PDF viewer does not. Chrome also correctly renders the ligatures *if* invoking Google Docs Viewer.

Tested with Chrome 13.0.782.107.
Hi Elnjen, Welcome to this thread. The bug has still not been fixed. It has not even been assigned to a developer for working on. Is there a way we can get the devs attention on this? I'd consider this a pretty major bug.
This is still a problem on Chrome 14.0.835.186 for Mac OS 10.6.8.

In my experience, most scientific papers I come across - presumably anything created with LaTeX - suffer from this problem. I consider this bug a showstopper.

One more example:

Indeed this is a truly horrible bug that affects the majority of scientific papers.

Due to the age of the issue, changing the priority to P3, however because it has at least 10 stars, marking it for review.

Status: Unconfirmed
I'd strongly argue that this needs its priority *raising* not lowering.

It is a nasty bug which makes Chrome unusable for many Mac-using academics, and which will certainly affect every Mac-user from time to time.

The age of the issue means you should escalate it - not downgrade it!

The only reason you are not hearing more noise about this issue is that affected uses have all switched to Firefox or Safari. Is that really what you want?
Comment 20 by, Aug 17 2012
I definitely agree with the previous comment.
Please, fix it as soon as possible, or I will have to switch to other browser.
I also agree -- ignoring user requests for a ridiculously protracted period of time is not an excuse for lowering priority. Many, many users in Academia hate this bug but have gotten zero play asking you guys to fix it, so we have had to seek work-arounds that mostly include using other browsers. The way this bug has been handled is unprofessional at best and infuriating at worst.
The issue is being investigated.
So, we believe we fixed this issue on Linux recently but we may need another, different fix for Mac.

This issue seems to be sensitive to OS version as well as fonts installed.

For anyone still hitting this, it'd really help get this resolved if you could provide:
- Exact OS and OS version used.
- Whether any extra fonts have been installed.
- An URL of a PDF that clearly and reliably reproduces this.

The problem still persists on Mac OS X 10.7.4

Chrome Version 21.0.1180.79

No additional fonts were installed.

URL of the pdf:
OSX 10.6.8
extra fonts - only whatever Office, Photoshop, and Acrobat installed by default
That arXiv PDF triggers the bug for me as well on OS X 10.8, Chrome 21.0.1180.81 beta. Directory listing of /Library/Fonts and /System/Library/Fonts attached.

Thanks very much for looking into this - much appreciated.

OS X V 10.8 Build 12A269
Chrome version 22.0.1229.8 dev

Extra fonts - see attached

The PDF's quoted above exhibit this problem for me, as does:

where the problem seems slightly different as most examples above - fi ligature is represented by an Ae ligature rather than a box.

In case you a rent aware, the Latex source for any arxiv PDF can be found be going to e.g.

I have the exact same situation as the others - I have problems with the files they mention, and the file 1208.0679v1.pdf by elnjen is shown correctly.

My fonts are attached.

I think @thestig has a merge in-progress to resolve this. I need to review that :P
Very pleased to hear the progress on this.
Still having issues with ligatures being consistently rendered incorrectly in PDF's on Chrome.
System: Mac OS X 10.8.2
Chrome: Version 23.0.1271.95

This problem arises very frequently when viewing scientific articles that have been prepared using LaTeX. For example, see this one:
Basically every ligature in the abstract is incorrectly displayed.

Let's hope this isn't too hard to fix. Thanks!
Yes - the fix hasn't been applied. Any progress updates on this?
Just more data relative to my earlier post:
The 1280.0679 PDF seems to render ligatures correctly in Chrome and Safari
The problem PDF I pointed to renders correctly in Safari and Preview.
Actually, I'm hopeful that next week's dev channel will fix this. Fingers crossed and let me know! :)
I never thought this day would come, but the latest dev 25.0.1359.3 seems to render PDF ligatures correctly. The bug seems to be fixed! :-)
Thanks for your work on this, devs!

Ronald. The ligatures render fine for me on that PDF you linked:

I am using Chrome
26.0.1403.0 dev

Mac OS Mountain Lion

Perhaps the fix has simply not made it across into the stable channel yet?
The bug label says "Mstone-25" which suggests the earliest version with the fix is the current Chrome 25 beta release.
