Muted Auto play ads still mute music

Reported by neal...@gmail.com, Feb 5 2018

Issue description

Example URL:
http://www.ajc.com/news/national/apple-text-glitch-replaces-with/RolFGAeg1JVhPF8AfvVk8H/

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Play some music via iOS Music app
2. Navigate to URL and wait for ad to start playing on its own
3. Music will fade even though the ad is muted
4. In some cases using the headset play button will restart the music, in some cases it won’t

NOTE I don’t think this is entirely solved by the upcoming feature to disable auto-play ads, because if the ad is muted Chrome shouldn’t cause music being played to be stopped, whether the ad is auto play or not.

What is the expected behavior?
Music shouldn’t stop for ads I don’t care about.

What went wrong?
Music stops and in some cases the ad isn’t even on screen so I have to hunt for it to stop it, or restart music playing for unobvious reasons.

Did this work before? N/A

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? No
 safari on iOS 11.2.5

I'm not sure how Chrome mutes audio on videos or if it is actually done by Chrome.
+michaeldo: Do you know?

I looked into this a bit and the same behavior is seen in both Chrome and Safari on iOS. We are not doing anything in Chrome to play or prevent this from playing today.

I don't know if the upcoming Chrome changes would fix this either, but it looks like the autoplay is either a bug (or intentional) in the videoplayer that is used by this site.

By inspecting the page, it appears to be using chartbeat_video.js as the player. The documentation I found[1] as well as the source on the page show that the video is loaded inside an overridden window.onload method, so the video source doesn't even exist until after the page is loaded. This is probably why the video can autoplay after it is loaded even in Safari.

iOS Chrome doesn't interact with videos at all from within Javascript, so it would be very difficult for us to prevent this. (Especially because the player is loaded after the page is loaded). However, Apple may be able to do something in WKWebView & Safari.

nealsid@, thank you for the report. I would recommend filing an Apple Radar for this issue as it is functioning the same in Safari and Apple should have a strong interest in fixing this. Additionally, trying to contact chartbeat directly may provide confirmation if this is a bug or intentional.

Thank you for the investigation and sorry for letting this drop off my radar. I was going to file a bug with Apple but am no longer able to reproduce it on the original AJC link. If it happens again I’ll file an Apple Radar link and contact chartbeat as you suggest.
