Black screen after signing out

Reported by tic...@gmail.com, Feb 1 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 10323.9.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.35 Safari/537.36
Platform: 10323.9.0 (Official Build) dev-channel link

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Sign out of my account
2. Black screen appears for a number of seconds
3. The sign in screen appears

What is the expected behavior?
The screen should not go black. A transitional message page should display, perhaps?

What went wrong?
I was presented with a black screen instead.

Did this work before? No

Chrome version: 65.0.3325.35 Channel: dev
OS Version: 10323.9.0
Flash Version: 28.0.0.152

I rarely see this as I rarely sign out but it was reported by users on Chromebook Central and it is something that needs addressing.

Zach, Stephane and dbehr@ had some ideas about this. Assigning to you to prioritize.

I would love to have this fixed. What's the scale of work like? Is it something we could get for M66 or M67?

@1: What we said was that this isn't something you can do in kernel, and that instead the proper solutions to use a system compositor. Thankfully, people have started working on Mus which should provide exactly what we need. Definitely not M66/M67; maybe jamescook@ has insights for timeline.
Do you mean we need a persistent compositor process that keeps running even as the browser process restarts?

If so, that's the "mash" phase of go/mustash, as the initial version of the mus phase will have the compositor as a service but still inside the browser process.

Persistent compositor process is currently tied to decoupling the window manager and system UI from the browser as well. So this is more like a year out, not M66/M67.

Yes a persistent compositor process is what I had in mind, thanks James for the update.

Okay, I'm going to set NextAction for this to Dec 2018 so we don't lose track of it once mash is ready.

[bulk edit] Moving OOBE/Login bugs to Jesse
Still happening on on the Pixel Slate 71.0.3578.94.

1. status area/uber tray
2. click on "sign out"

or

1. power button
2. sign out

Seems like the length of time the black screen shows has increased.
