The "Clear All" button in Application -> Cookies is a stop sign icon and not a delete icon.

Reported by o.he...@icloud.com, Jan 29 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/64.0.3282.119 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open DevTools and go to Application -> Cookies
2. Look at the stop button
3. Wonder how to stop cookies
4. Hover over button, see that it says "Clear All"
5. Question everything you thought you knew about the world

The choice of delete icon.

Did this work before? N/A

o.heard@ Thanks for the issue.

As per the above description, this is a Feature request to change the icon of Clear All in Devtools -> Application -> Cookies.

Hence marking this as Untriaged for further updates from Dev.

Thanks..

Thanks for the report. The current cookies-clear-all-icon is the 'circle with a diagonal line' for 'Clear All'. Since this is consistent with 'Clear all' toolbar buttons in Console, Network, Performance, Memory, and Audits panels at the moment, changing the icon in all those places is likely to surprise users.

Could you please let us know what your expected 'Clear all' icon would look like?

The best I can think of off the top of my head would be a broomstick or dustpan & brush. Something that indicates “sweeping away”. The next best would be a bin/trash can. Essentially something that indicates cleaning. A cloth would work with the right design but I don’t think that’s viable with single colour icons.

I’m not kidding when I say I’ve been using Chrome since the day it was first released and this is the first time I’ve become aware that those icons are meant to delete/clear things. In all these years I’ve never clicked any of them. Mind you I also never thought to ask why the stop toolbar button in Performance is disabled when the profiler is running. There’s already a bin icon there but that’s for GC so it makes sense but I’ve only just figured that out too tbf.

There’s plenty of space on each tab to include labels next to the icons, so that would be a huge win because then everyone will know at a glance exactly what’s what.

I don’t know about you but if I’ve got the dev tools open I’ve probably also got a head full of hypotheses and/or execution flows. That’s likely why nobody has questioned it until now.

The icon for “Clear storage” in the Application section of the Application tab is already a bin so it’s inconsistent as it is now anyway. Might as well settle on something that makes the most sense.

I’d be interested to see if there’s a spike in usage of the buttons if you ran an A/B test on showing labels.

But yeah I’m willing to bet most devs have gotten by without using the stop buttons or being surprised like me when they found out they’re actually clear/delete buttons. I think the real surprise for the majority will be that they were actually clear/delete buttons in the first place! Although it’s equally probable that they’ll know something is different but can’t quite put their finger on it. Like when someone gets a new pair of glasses or starts using lip balm.

Just had a more consistent idea. Use the bin icon but with a smaller icon of what it deletes on the bin, like a sticker. It would still work better with labels too imho.

GC could be replaced with a little man holding a garbage bag, as if he’s taking out the garbage.

These suggestions are neat, but with current design priorities, these icons won't change soon. I'm archiving this for now, but our designer can consider making these more consistent in the next visual refresh.
