Hangouts doesn't work any more - always shows a blank screen with hangouts logo

Project Member Reported by stanisc@chromium.org, Jan 27 2018

Issue description

Chrome Version: 63.0.3239.132 (Official Build) (64-bit)
OS: MaxOS Sierra 10.13.2 (17C205)

Hangouts window is always blank except for a logo in the middle - see the attached screenshot. I tried closing and opening the window, restarting Chrome (including chrome://restart) - nothing helps.

This obviously hinders my ability to communicate with my colleagues from my Mac laptop.

Maybe use the Hangouts site? Best of luck.

This sounds like a bad push on their side. I have a version of dev where the extension works, but when I start a bisect with the same dev version and the latest package from the Chrome Webstore, it breaks.
This might be b/71647499
I think it's more likely b/72984129. The workaround in comment 13 of that bug worked for me.

Namely uninstall and reinstall the Hangouts extension (specifically the one linked in the hamburger menu on hangouts.google.com).
