Issue descriptionChrome Version: 64.0.3282.122 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) Chrome OS Version: Version 64.0.3282.122 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) Chrome OS Platform: Samsung Chromebook Pro (Caroline) Network info: Motorola SVG2482AC Steps To Reproduce: USB: (1) Download an app, ex. Brother iPrint&Label (2) Open app (3) Connect appropriate hardware device (ex. Brother QL800) to Chromebook using type C converter (4) Search for connected printers Expected Result: USB device is recognized, and label printing can ensue. Actual Result: USB device is not recognized within the app. WiFi: (1) Download an app, ex. Square Point of Sale (2) Open app, sign in to valid account (3) Connect Square-approved hardware Star Micronics TSP143IIILAN receipt printer (4) Go to settings > printers and try to create a printer station while printer and computer are on same local area network Expected Result: Receipt printer should be recognized, as the app is supposed to scan the network. Actual Result: No receipt printer is listed. How frequently does this problem reproduce? (Always, sometimes, hard to reproduce?) ALWAYS What is the impact to the user, and is there a workaround? If so, what is it? The impact is that seemingly no Android apps seem to be able to communicate with external hardware, making the apps and their accompanying hardware pointless to Chrome OS users looking for a personal/business solution. Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screen shot or log if possible. I tried testing the exact same versions of the apps on a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone and they worked flawlessly over USB and WiFi. There appears to be a major issue with Chrome OS and how external hardware communicates through the Android compatibility layer. If this is the only Chrome OS device affected, I think an immediate patch is in order. It is also VERY IMPORTANT to note that when a USB receipt printer (Star TSP100 Eco) is connected, Chrome OS notifies the hardware is installed and that driver software is needed, while Android app Square still does not notice or recognize the receipt printer is even connected. Chrome OS is not relaying the hardware connection(s) to the Android app.

Unfortunately USB to the Android container is not currently supported but is a work in progress, however we do not have a timeline. For the network based device this could potentially work but is dependent on the discovery protocol used, if it requires the Android side to act as a server in some capacity it is unlikely to work on Chrome OS. |
