Files App: Users can't delete files from Images, Videos, and Audio folders |
||||
Issue descriptionUsers are complaining that they can't delete files in the Media View folders (Images, Videos, Audio) of the Files App. Users want to be able to delete these files from these folders, but don't know how to and see no option to do so. We received 7 such user reports specifically mentioning "delete icon" since January 1st. Sample User Reports: - (With screenshot) https://listnr.corp.google.com/report/84933523559 - https://listnr.corp.google.com/report/84764464913 - https://listnr.corp.google.com/report/84884106360 - https://listnr.corp.google.com/product/208/report/84913053586 In addition, users are confused by the instructions in our Help Center Article "Open, save, or delete files" <https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1700055>, which tells users to follow these steps to delete a file: 1. Open Files app. 2. Click the file or folder you want to delete. 3. Click [Delete icon] and then Delete.

This is WAI. The Media folders in the left navigation are read-only. We have work planned in 2018 to improve/clarify this interaction.

It would be nice if you could add a popup when hovering the cursor or clicking on it. "go to Downloads folder or Android settings to delete"

Then place them behind a flag with the default state set to disabled.

This is unacceptable UI/UX. How would a user know that these folders are read only? There is no documentation or indication of that fact. I understand that changes are coming to Files eventually, but users are confused NOW.

This is absolutely unacceptable UI/UX. Related scenario: Open Microsoft Word (Android app) Create a document and download it to your machine Select "This Device" when it asks where you want to download it Default location is "Documents" This "Documents" location is nowhere to be found via Chrome OS. You have to download an Android File Manager just to find the .docx file you just created and downloaded. Chromebooks are supposed to be easy to use for people who aren't technically inclined and adding Android apps has turned them into something less user-friendly than Windows. This relationship between Chrome OS and Android files absolutely needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed SOON.

We've updated the "Open, save, or delete files" article to make this more clear: https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1700055. As Weifang has said, the Chrome OS team has "work planned in 2018 to improve/clarify this interaction". |
