Media remoting doesn't remote letterboxed fullscreen videos |
||||
Issue descriptionMedia remoting is only activated when video is "dominant" in the viewport. The current "dominant" calculation doesn't account for letterboxing/pillarboxing, which prevents the remoting of fullscreen 9:16, 4:3, 3:4 etc video on 16:9 displays.

The current "dominant" calculation is in the blink side, which doesn't have the letterboxing/pillarboxing information. Changing the "dominant" calculation to some other heuristics may solve for some cases, but not guarantee to cover all cases, and may end up starting remoting in some unintended cases.

Had a quick chat with miu@. We agree that it would be nice to fix this issue, but since 16:9 videos are much more popular than others, lower the priority for now.

It's worth keeping in mind that only about 2/3rds of computer displays are 16:9; other popular aspect ratios include 16:10 even 3:2, and on the wide end there's several 21:9 displays on the market. And then there's even this: https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/gaming/49--chg90-qled-gaming-monitor-lc49hg90dmnxza/. On some of these displays you'd get pillarboxing instead of letterboxing but I'm guessing that in either case it could cause remoting not to trigger.

In addition to pillarboxing, there's also the case of 16:9 on convertibles in portrait mode.

This would be another good starter bug that would address a long standing annoyance with media remoting. Will assign to aburago@ once their chromium account is set up.
