Lag when keyboard light turns on/off

Reported by jordyheu...@gmail.com, Jan 19 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_13_2) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/63.0.3239.132 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec92Wa8zJs8

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Go to settings -> Keyboard -> check "Turn keyboard backlight on after X seconds of inactivity".
2. Then start watching a video (like YouTube, Netflix, ...), after X seconds the keyboard backlight turns off and the video lags. When you start again using the pc, the keyboard backlight turns on and the video lags again.

What is the expected behavior?
That the video doesn't lag.

What went wrong?
The video lags.

You can find the settings of my keyboard in the attachment.

Did this work before? No

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Thank you for the report. I can't reproduce it with 10.12.6 on my MacBook Air 11 Mid 2012.

Maybe this is a macOS 10.13-specific issue?

Unable to reproduce this issue on reported version 63.0.3239.132 using Mac 10.13.1 Mac book pro and Mac book Air with steps below.

1. In Keyboard preferences changed "Turn Keyboard backlight off after "10 secs" of inactivity.
2. Navigated to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec92Wa8zJs8 and after 10 secs on inactivity no lag is seen, and after using system didn't see any lag. Attaching screencast for reference.

@Reporter: Could you please check the video and let us know if we miss anything? Also please check the issue on fresh profile which do not have any apps/extensions. This would help in further triaging of the issue.

Thanks!

So at the moment the problem is a bit inconsistent. At first it lagged always, now it has reduced a lot, i don't know why though. I was able to capture the problem, you can see it in the video at around 00:27, 00:38-00:40 and 1:10.

Thank you for providing more feedback. Adding requester "sc00335628@techmahindra.com" to the cc list and removing "Needs-Feedback" label.

At first it seemed that the problem had reduced, but it is back more frequent after I rebooted.

I'd probably blame this on macOS ...
I wrote a bug report to apple, but they closed it and said i should make a bug report with Chrome because the problem only persists with Chrome.

did you try on Safari? does it repro on Safari?

I tried it, but it didn't reproduce on Safari.
I couldn't repro this bug on my Macbook Air 10.13.2 + chrome 66.0.3355.0 by playing any youtube video.
reporter@, do you still see this bug?

I'm able to constantly reproduce this issue on MBP 2017 10.13.3.
Moreover, I have a lag on every scroll of the page that triggers backlight to be automatically turned on.

I see that reporter's MBP model is MacBookPro14,2, mine is MacBookPro14,3.
So I think this is only relevant for newer touch bar models.

There is no lag in Safari.
There is lag in any other browsers (Chrome, FF, Opera)
If I turn my keyboard backlight off manually, there is no lag at all.
Have no such issue with older MBP 2011.

Sorry for my absence. The bug still happens with me, but i am getting used to it..
It is indeed probably a problem with the newer touch bar models.
Just rechecked FF to be sure. The scroll lag is there, but no video lag.
Status: Unconfirmed (was: WontFix)
re-opening. QA team, can you test on the newer MacBookPro14,2 or MacBookPro14,3?
I also have a quarter-to-half second lag initially when scrolling with the Touch Pad, and after a delay of 10 seconds or so without scrolling.

The lag does not happen when disabling hardware acceleration.

MacBookPro11,5
macOS 10.13.6
Labels: TE-Hardware-Dependency
Unable to reproduce the issue on mac 10.13.3 using chrome latest stable #68.0.3440.106 and latest canary #70.0.3522.0 as per comment #0. Observed that the video did not lag.

The issue seems to be reproducible using MBP 14.2 or 14.3. As the device is not available with TE-team. Hence, adding label TE-Hardware-Dependency.

Thanks...!!

@sandersd for routing. I think these 14.2 and 14.3 MBP's are used around the office, I haven't been able to borrow one yet, but if I do I'll see if I can repro the issue.

Comment 20 by sande...@chromium.org, Jan 17 (5 days ago)

I do not have this device, nor does this seem to be a media issue. It is possible that it is a wakelock-related issue, but we do not automatically take wakelocks for inline video.

If hardware acceleration affects the result, then macOS is failing to detect activity in the accelerated path but not in the unaccelerated path. Seems like an OS bug, but perhaps we should be explicitly telling macOS that we are busy?
