Logitech HD Webcam C310: creating a hissing sound while changing the input source from other device. [camera specific]

Project Member Reported by vasanthakumar@chromium.org, Jan 17 2018

Issue description

Chrome Version: 10176.47.0 / 64.0.3282.87 Zako, Tricky
OS: chrome OS

Similar test was performed in Glimmer device and it cannot be reproduced. Thus it seems limits only to chrome box as of now.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
Precondition - have at least two microphones and two cameras attached to the device under test. One among them should be Logitech UVC camera.

1. Browse to https://webrtc.github.io/samples/src/content/getusermedia/source/
2. Open the javascript console (alt+cmd+j or ctr+shift+j) and watch for any errors
3. Select each audio input source, verify that you can hear audio from that source (e.g. scratch that specific microphone)
4. Keep changing the 3 possible audio sources.

Optional: Once in a while Select each video source, verify that you see video from each source

What is the expected result?
When you change from other sources to Logitech input source, we can hear clearly a hissing sound. Some cases it mutes itself instead of hissing sound.

What happens instead?
Audio from the device should be clear and no external sounds should be heard.

I'm unsure what you mean by a hissing sound in this case. From the two examples, it sounds like there's some sort of buffer size mismatch: each burst of audio is interleaved with periods of zero signal.

Is it possible to test this with CrAS directly to try and determine if the problem is in CrAS or further down the line (Chrome or WebRTC, for example).

Taking a shot that cychiang@ might be able to dig deeper.

Hissing sound in sense a noise is generated which can be clearly heard by us. Kindly check the file audio_debug.output.54.wav. My voice is suppressed and a noise is generated. This noise is not made externally. 100% sure generated by the microphone of the camera. This happens only with the specified camera.

My guess would be OS couldn't process the change of input and access the mike as expected. Feel free to ask me if I can help you in reproducing the bug.

This issue is still reproducible in M67 & M66 Zako. 67.3376.0 / 10510.0.0

This issue is not reproducible in Panther with 67.3376.0 / 10510.0.0. Both these devices are very similar in configuration but behaving differently.

Panther:
"CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4600U CPU @ 2.10GHz ( x86_64architecture - 4 processors )
Memory: 4.08GB"

Zako:
"CPU: Intel Core I7 4600U, 2.10Ghz,
4GB RAM, 16 GB SSD"

Hi Yuhsuan, please buy a Logitect Webcam and try it on Zako.
You can use cras_test_client --select_input to switch between input nodes.

Thanks!

Sorry I can't get any Zako. I will test it on Tricky first (which has same reference board). Or any other devices can reproduce this problem?
#12 Thanks for the update. I haven't reproduced in other devices. As of now only in Zako and Tricky. If you suggest any other devices which could be affected, then I can help you. We have quite a lot of chrome devices with us.
Sorry for late reply. I got Tricky finally (10176.47.0) but I can't trigger this problem. I used the Logitech Webcam C310 and C920 for cameras. And using 3.5mm one jack headphone(also for listening) and other usb headphone for mics. I can't hear any hiss sound while I changing audio input source. Is it easily triggered?

By the way, if I choose same audio input source, the stream will be removed so we can't hear anything. I don't know whether the problem of muted is related to it.

Thanks!

Hi,

I am not able to reproduce in Tricky nor Zako. Thus we can close this ticket for now. If needed we can reopen again.
