The bug also appeared on Desktop version: 65.0.3311.3 for Linux 65.0.3315.3 for Linux It worked fine (not buggy) on 65.0.3298.3.

I don't repro this bug on 65.0.3315.0 and 65.0.3318.0 for Win.

I recognize the versions given by extrom... : they were those I uploaded automatically with chrome dev update. Quite strange that you could not reproduce because without doing anything it is broken. But : - youtube is displayed well - I didn't identify which types of videos or readers are impacted (google drive doesn't work - see new screenshot) - More strange, even if the video isn't displayed, the picture "anouncing" video is shown
,
Jan 13 2018
In fact even youtube doesn't display video from time to time but thumbs from the video (see. screeshot)
,
Jan 13 2018
Haapily, I found a workaround to display videos. I disabled hardware video acceleration which was activated for a while (all switchs were by default before) !

Unable to reproduce the issue on reported chrome version 65.0.3315.3 using windows 10 with the below mentioned steps. 1. Launched chrome 2. Navigated to ttp://www.01net.com/astuces/comment-afficher-un-compteur-et-les-limitations-de-vitesse-dans-google-maps-sur-android-1332553.html We are able to play the video without any issue. Attaching the screen cast for reference. @Reporter: Could you please check the screen cast and let us know if we have missed any steps while reproducing the issue. As per your comment#6 the issue seems to be resolved, please confirm on this for further investigation. Thanks!

I received an update of chrome : version is now Version 65.0.3322.3 (Build officiel) dev (64 bits). Bug is still present when flags are all reset to defaults but I confirm that workaroud is to disable hardware acceleration to solve the problem (cf. screen cast).

I found another site where, even with my workaround, some videos aren't displayed while they are correctly shown with Edge (but not Firefox 57.0.4). I think it depends on the player : http://www.allocine.fr/video/player_gen_cmedia=18372199&cfilm=55681.html this one is the trailer of an old movie. For recent movies, no problem with the workaround Sorry ;-(

Are there new drivers available for your GPU? Generally this is a driver issue of sorts.

7chervet@ Thanks for the feedback. Able to reproduce this issue on Windows 10, Mac OS 10.12.6 and Ubuntu 14.04 on the latest Canary 65.0.3323.0 and Stable 63.0.3239.132 using the URL given in comment #10. Can observe that only the audio is playing, but the video is not seen. Attached is the screen cast for reference. This is a non-regression issue as it is observed from M50 Chrome builds. Hence, marking it as Untriaged for updates from dev team. Thanks..

I made a test html file with local videos (See attachment). All 5 videos played smoothly with 65.0.3298.3, but not played with: 65.0.3311.3 (Only showed 5 still images) 65.0.3315.3 (Only showed 5 still images)

Below is a site where, even with the workaround, videos are not displayed whereas it worked in correct version : https://www.sciencesetavenir.fr/nature-environnement/a-paris-badauds-et-bateliers-resignes-regardent-monter-la-seine_120099 And with firefox 58, it is well shown

Hmm +gpu folks, since the only thing I see in the change log that might be video related is angle updates: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+log/65.0.3311.0..65.0.3315.0?pretty=fuller&n=10000

The allocine site is serving mpeg4 videos, so it will never play in Chrome on desktop actually. If it has recently stopped working, it is a site bug of some sorts. Is there another site that you are not seeing video on? I'm unable to reproduce the issue on the original link in comment#0.

I always checked the state of the bug with the first URL given in comment#0 thas is : http://www.01net.com/astuces/comment-afficher-un-compteur-et-les-limitations-de-vitesse-dans-google-maps-sur-android-1332553.html With this URL and with the version given in comment 27, with HW acceleration on, I confirm that I hear the sound but the video isn't displayed. With no acceleration, it works fine. But you can use url given in comment#14 : I just checked that videos are not displayed too whent HW acceleration is on

Hi All
I have the same issue (video is not played but I can hear the sound)
I made some tests and found that the problem arises only in Windows 10 system (does not matter 32 or 64 bit), while Windows 7 is OK for both 32 & 64 bit
I tried Opera, Vivaldi and Chrome - they all have the same issue (while FireFox and IE 11 does not)
I have Toshiba Satellite A300 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 videocard with Microsoft drivers

Drivers are pretty old are there any newer ones?

>> Drivers are pretty old are there any newer ones? No I do not think so. But again, under Win 7 old drivers work well And when I run Opera with "--disable-direct-composition" and Hardware acceleration enabled - all seems to be fine Does it mean, that in this case hardware acceleration works, but with some restrictions. And better using with "--disable-direct-composition" and hardware acceleration enabled, then simply remove hardware acceleration from settings?
,
Sep 13
Hmm, +zmo, probably this is a case which should be on the GPU blacklist if it's not working with direct composition. I thought there was another bug about that somewhere.
,
Sep 17
My understanding is without hardware overlay support, direct composition isn't doing anything in Chrome. So it's a bit strange to me why you experience the difference with/without the flag, because on AMD, we definitely don't have hardware overlay support. sunnyps@: can you confirm the above or I misunderstood something?
,
Sep 18
Then why the same hardware, the same Chromium (Opera, Vivaldi, Chrome) does not break these videos on Windows 7??? And it seems that the drivers are the same at Windows 7 and Windows 10. So what is the difference here?
,
Sep 18
OK, let me correct it: we do create a different surface if DirectComposition is supported, even though we don't need it. So for now, let's just blacklist DirectComposition on AMD/NVidia GPUs where it's not needed. This should work around the bug here.
,
Sep 18
Next step here is to use direct composition only if overlays are supported. This should be a straightforward change, but we don't absolutely need it for the time being. Please use this bug to track the original issue that's seen on Windows only. If you see video rendering bugs in Linux or Mac, they are most certainly other issues.

I wonder when the fix is going to be implemented? Any ETA (even approx)?
,
Sep 21
The CL in #46 should fix the issue. So if you download Chrome Canary, most likely it's already there. https://www.google.com/chrome/canary/

Sep 24
Thanks. I'll be waiting for the stable release of Chromium and when Opera starts using it )

Per offline discussion with sunnyps@, we are going to limit this workaround to AMD GPUs only (probably driver 8.970.100.9001 only), so we could limit the scope of impact and merge back to Beta, so you will get this fix sooner.

With DirectComposition, we have a real surface inside a Begin/EndDraw pair, and use a default 1x1 pbuffer surface outside of that. That surface must be created with flexible surface compatibility so that we can MakeCurrent outside of Begin/EndDraw. Noticed this while working on a related change. There were some crashes in MakeCurrent in SetSwapInterval which was fixed in a different way by removing SetSwapInterval, but it's possible the root cause was this.
