Issue descriptionBrowser/OS: Chrome Version: 64.0.3282.41 + beta Operating System: Chrome OS, version 64.0.3282.41 REPRODUCTION CASE Example a user of Google Chrome OS devices in shared workplace schools or colleges will often clear cookies for privacy or password difficulties. Afterwards the user is unable to stop cloud sync default process unitendendly leaving data on publically shared computers. Opposite the sync security policy recommended by Google in the help. Summary: After clearing browsing data of history, cookies and cache. Chrome OS defaults to syncing google cloud documents to local machine. User is unable to stop sync. Steps to reproduce: 1. Clearing browsing data of history, cookies on Chrome OS. 2. Reboot. 3. Chrome OS defaults to syncing google cloud documents to local machine, user is unable to stop sync. Apparently the sync process is now taking precedence over the UI controls to stop data syncing locally. I have noticed this issue before, now the latency to interrupt is many minutes. Perhaps it is a factor of data stored in Google drive (and I now have far more saved data). Thus the default UI control is not working as intended because cannot follow the security policy recommended by Google. I have tested the same on 3 different Chrome OS computers: Samsung Chromebox Series 3. Google Pixel 2013. Samsung Chromebook Pro 2016. I have a few questions to clarify what exactly the issue is: In step 1, what data are you clearing and how? In step 3, what do you mean by "user is unable to stop sync?" Also in step 3, is your complaint that the data hasn't been deleted at all, or that data is being newly saved?

In step 1, clearing Chrome browser cookies, cache under security and privacy in Chrome OS (screenshot 3). In step 3, after clearing Chrome browser in step 1 the preference not to stop the data sync from Google drive to local ChromeOS machine is reset to default to sync. Newly saved data is then synced onto ChromeOS machine from gdrive without regard to users security and privacy preference set via the sync control the small black button in first screenshot 1 above. Which cannot be interrupted during sync. tl:dr On my older i5 chromebox today, I was unable to interrupt the gdrive data sync apparently until it completed (about 10-12 minutes). Many users will forget and leave data on public machines. The fileSystem provider does not appear to save this data encrypted. Although ChromeOS may do so. IDK. https://developer.chrome.com/apps/fileSystemProvider

I don't think this a (capital s) Sync issue, since drive sync is confusingly a totally distinct process.

This seems like the gist of the issue reported here: "After clearing browsing data of history, cookies and cache. Chrome OS defaults to syncing google cloud documents to local machine. User is unable to stop sync." Please note that clearing browsing data is different from syncing documents from Google Drive. If you'd like to disable syncing your Google Drive, you can turn the sync off by going to: Chrome OS Settings > Advanced Settings > Downloads > Disconnect Google Drive account |
