I was able to confirm this in Chrome 65.0.3315.0 DEV
AXARIASetSize and AXARIAPosInSet computed properly when the attributes are not declared.

File Directory Treeview Example Using Computed Properties:

File Directory Treeview Example Using Declared Properties:
https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-practices/examples/treeview/treeview-1/treeview-1b.html

The accessibility tree of both examples are similar.

Tested with VoiceOver: didn't hear the "item 2 of 3".
Tested with ChromeVox: heard "item 2 of 3".
