Omnibox not suggesting a page from my history with exact title match |
|
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 63.0.3239.84 OS: Mac OSX What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Started typing the exact title of a webpage (https://www.backcountry.com/explore/train-eccentric-leg-strength-for-alpine-skiing) I know I visited on this profile a couple weeks ago ("Preseason ski...") What is the expected result? (2) See that URL suggested in omnibox suggestions (probably as the first one?) What happens instead? (2) Didn't see the suggestion. Tried several variants of the title, and also tried starting to type the URL. (3) Navigated to myactivity.google.com (I'm syncing to my personal account in the profile in question), found several entires in my history (Dec. 3, Dec. 4, Dec. 8) for this page. (4) Clicked on one of those entires to open the page in a new tab (5) Created a new tab and started typing "Preseason ski..." This time, it was the first suggestion in the dropdown. Not sure if there's a good way to triage or debug this, since it's now appearing in my list of suggestions, but it felt like a pretty poor omnibox interaction to me since I was typing an exact title match and it wasn't showing up. To Emily to help triage.

Got it, thanks for the info Mark! I think you're probably right, that I had only visited it 3 times and hadn't visited it within the last three days. Do you know if the count for total number of visits includes cross-device visits? I'm guessing since we don't really sync all navigations that it's just visits from the current device? It's interesting to me that we have such a short threshold for the time window there. Maybe I just fell into an edge case with the heuristic, but I know that it felt weird that it wasn't showing up in the omnibox :) Why don't we put it in the history index if you've visited it once over the last three months? Is it just performance issues with that approach?

The thresholds do not include cross-device visits. (unless those visits are synced. Those visits are synced only if the URL was selected from the omnibox.) We put all visits in the history index for matching at the beginning of the URL. For full-text search of the URL and title, we need to limit it for memory and speed reasons. |
